Okpebholo Seeks Stronger Federal Alliance on Water Projects, Moves to Tackle Vandalism in Edo

The Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with the Federal Government to boost water infrastructure, enhance security around critical assets, and improve service delivery to residents.

Okpebholo made this known on Tuesday at Government House, Benin City, while receiving the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Joseph Terlumun Utsev, alongside a delegation from the Benin-Owena River Basin Development Authority (BORBDA).

The governor stressed that sustained federal-state partnership is key to achieving long-term development, especially in the water sector. He expressed concern over reports of vandalism and mismanagement of public facilities after personally inspecting some of the projects under the authority.

“A lot of resources are being wasted. This is not acceptable. You cannot invest so much and have it destroyed by acts of vandalism. We are taking steps to strengthen security around such areas,” he said.

He disclosed plans to establish a security outfit in vulnerable locations, including Obayantor, which he described as volatile, adding that a Forward Operating Base (FOB) would help protect lives and infrastructure.

On funding, the governor assured that the state would meet its counterpart obligations for ongoing federal water projects, particularly the Jattu Dam in Etsako West Local Government Area, noting that the project would significantly improve water supply in Edo North upon completion.

“We will look into the 25 percent counterpart funding to ensure we meet our obligations. But beyond funding, timely completion is critical. Our people need water, and that project must be delivered on schedule,” he added.

Okpebholo also aligned the state’s development efforts with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, noting that ongoing projects reflect national priorities.

Earlier, Minister Utsev commended the state government for its cooperation and ongoing infrastructure improvements, particularly road rehabilitation leading to federal facilities.

He, however, highlighted key challenges facing BORBDA operations in Edo, including insecurity, vandalism, and encroachment on project sites, especially around Obayantor, Illushi, and other operational areas.

The minister called for increased support from the state in protecting federal water infrastructure and reclaiming encroached lands.

He also urged the state to fulfill its 25 percent counterpart funding commitment for the Jattu Dam project to ensure its timely completion.

Utsev further raised concerns about erosion threatening facilities at the Auchi Integrated Farm and appealed for urgent intervention.

He expressed optimism that improved collaboration between the Federal Government and Edo State would enhance water supply, boost agricultural productivity, and drive rural development.

The visit highlighted growing synergy between both levels of government in addressing critical infrastructure and development needs across Edo State.
