OsunDecides 2026: Meet Professor Joshua Ogunwole, FUOYE Vice Chancellor Who Declared Adeleke Winner

Professor Joshua Olalekan Ogunwole, ViceChancellor of the Federal University Oye Ekiti (FUOYE), has emerged as a central figure in the aftermath of the 2026 Osun State governorship election after serving as the Independent National Electoral Commission’s Returning Officer who formally declared Governor Ademola Adeleke the winner.

Ogunwole announced the final result at the INEC State Collation Centre in Osogbo in the early hours of Sunday, August 16, following the completion of collation from the state’s 30 local government areas. Channels Television reported that the collation began around 2 a.m. and concluded at about 8 a.m.

According to the final figures reported by INEC, Adeleke, who contested on the Accord Party platform, secured 511,067 votes, defeating the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, who polled 444,815 votes. The margin was 66,252 votes. The African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, Najeem Salaam, finished third with 17,180 votes.

Who Is Professor Joshua Olalekan Ogunwole?

Ogunwole is a Nigerian academic, soil scientist and university administrator with more than three decades of experience spanning teaching, research and higher education management.

Born on July 23, 1967, in Ibadan, Oyo State, he obtained his B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Soil Science from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. His academic specialisations include soil science, soil physics, soil ecology, soil organic carbon and carbon sequestration.

Before becoming FUOYE Vice Chancellor, Ogunwole served as Vice Chancellor of Bowen University, Iwo, from 2018 to 2023. He subsequently returned to FUOYE, where he served as Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Strategic Partnerships, Research, Innovation and Linkages.

The FUOYE Governing Council appointed him the institution’s fifth substantive Vice-Chancellor in November 2025. He formally assumed office in February 2026, succeeding Professor Abayomi Sunday Fasina.

A Career Built Around Research and International Scholarship

Ogunwole’s academic career extends beyond Nigeria. FUOYE records show that he was a Fulbright Scholar at Pennsylvania State University in the United States between 2009 and 2010. He also undertook a TWAS postdoctoral fellowship in India and participated in the TWAS Associateship Programme through the International Water Management Institute.

He later held an Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship at the University of Hannover, Germany, where he conducted research into carbon dynamics in soils. His professional engagements have also taken him to several African countries, including Ethiopia, Kenya, Tunisia and Mali, in connection with agricultural, environmental and natural resource programmes.

His research interests have included sustainable agriculture, soil management, carbon sequestration, environmental management and climate adaptation, areas that have featured prominently in his academic career and international collaborations.

From Academic Leadership to Electoral Responsibility

Ogunwole’s role in the Osun election places his academic credentials in a different national context. As Returning Officer, he was responsible for announcing the collated governorship results and formally declaring the candidate who met the constitutional requirements.

The Independent Newspaper reported that Ogunwole declared Adeleke the winner after the completion of results from all 30 local government areas.

His involvement also highlights the longstanding practice of Nigeria’s electoral commission drawing senior academics and university administrators into election management, particularly as returning officers for major elections.

The 2026 Osun election was closely watched because it represented a significant test of the state’s political balance ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. Adeleke’s victory gives him another term after his first electoral victory in 2022 and marks another major chapter in the state’s competitive political history.

Adeleke Secures Second Term

The final figures show that Adeleke won with a substantial margin over his closest challenger. His 511,067 votes represented a 66,252 vote advantage over Oyebamiji.

Channels Television, PRNigeria and The Independent all reported the declaration and the final vote figures, providing independent confirmation of Ogunwole’s role in announcing the result.

Beyond the numbers, the election and its aftermath will likely remain significant in assessing voter participation, electoral administration and the evolving political alignments in Osun State.

For Professor Joshua Olalekan Ogunwole, the declaration adds a notable public-service responsibility to an already extensive academic and administrative career placing the FUOYE Vice Chancellor temporarily at the centre of one of Nigeria’s most closely followed subnational electoral contests.
