OsunDecides2026: Makinde Congratulates Adeleke, Says Voters’ Mandate Has Prevailed!

Reported by Musa Antiketu,| Journalist at Obaland magazine.

OSOGBO, Osun State — Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has congratulated Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, following his reported victory in the 2026 Osun State governorship election, saying the outcome reflects the will of the electorate.

Makinde’s reaction places the Osun election within the broader democratic conversation in the South-West, particularly around voters’ ability to determine political leadership through the ballot.

The governor commended Osun voters for participating in the electoral process and described Adeleke’s victory as an indication that the people’s mandate had prevailed.

The development comes after months of intense political activity in Osun, where Adeleke sought another term amid a competitive contest involving major political parties and candidates.

Ahead of the election, the contest attracted considerable attention because of its implications for the political balance in the South-West and the strength of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the region. Reports had also highlighted divisions within the PDP and competing political alignments ahead of the poll.

Makinde and Adeleke have maintained a political relationship within the South-West PDP structure. Their political partnership has previously featured calls for stronger cooperation between Oyo and Osun, including collaboration on regional development and infrastructure.

The significance of Makinde’s congratulatory message therefore extends beyond a personal gesture. It also underscores the importance of inter-state political relationships in the South-West, where developments in one state can have implications for regional alliances and the wider political landscape.

The principle invoked by Makinde  that political authority ultimately derives from voters  has featured prominently in reactions to previous Osun elections. Following Adeleke’s 2022 victory, Makinde similarly argued that the election demonstrated that political power rests with the people. THISDAY reported at the time that Makinde described Adeleke’s victory as evidence that “the power of the people has again triumphed.”

That earlier election was itself politically significant. Adeleke defeated the incumbent governor, Gboyega Oyetola, in the 2022 governorship election before subsequent legal challenges eventually reached the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court ultimately upheld Adeleke’s victory.

The 2026 contest consequently carries its own significance for Osun’s democratic trajectory. For voters, the central issue remains whether the electoral process accurately reflects their choices and whether political actors accept the outcome peacefully and within the framework of the law.

For the wider South-West, the result could also influence the configuration of political alliances ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. The region remains a major political battleground, with parties seeking to consolidate their influence across its six states.

Obaland magazine notes that congratulatory statements from political leaders should be understood alongside official electoral declarations and verified results from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Political claims and reactions do not, by themselves, constitute the formal declaration of an election result.

As Osun moves beyond the campaign and voting stages, attention is expected to shift toward governance, accountability and the ability of the victorious administration to translate its electoral mandate into tangible improvements in the lives of residents.

The election also offers another opportunity for Nigerian democracy to demonstrate that political competition can be conducted through peaceful participation, credible institutions and respect for the choices of citizens.

For Adeleke, the reported re-election represents both a political victory and a renewed responsibility to the people of Osun. For Makinde and other regional leaders, the development reinforces the continuing importance of democratic legitimacy and respect for voters’ decisions.
