The Oyo State Rule of Law Enforcement Authority (OYRLEA), working alongside security operatives, has impounded 20 cows during two separate enforcement operations in Ibadan over alleged open grazing, residential livestock rearing and destruction of farm crops.
The enforcement operations form part of ongoing efforts by the Oyo State Government to implement regulations governing livestock movement and grazing activities across the state.
According to the authority, the operations followed complaints and observations concerning cattle being allowed to graze in areas where such activities are restricted. Officials also raised concerns about the alleged rearing of cattle within residential communities and the reported destruction of agricultural crops.
The enforcement comes amid continuing efforts across parts of Nigeria to manage tensions between farmers and livestock owners. Open grazing and alleged crop destruction have remained recurring issues in several farming communities, with governments increasingly introducing regulations intended to control livestock movement and reduce disputes.
OYRLEA has maintained that its enforcement activities are aimed at ensuring compliance with existing state laws rather than targeting any particular group. The agency has also stressed the importance of lawful livestock management and peaceful relations between farming and herding communities.
The impoundment of the 20 cows underscores the continuing enforcement of Oyo State’s livestock regulations and the authorities’ stated determination to address violations involving open grazing and unauthorised livestock activities.
At the same time, effective enforcement requires due process, transparent handling of impounded animals and continued engagement with farmers, herders, community leaders and other stakeholders. Such measures remain important for reducing disputes while protecting agricultural livelihoods and residential communities.
The latest development therefore adds to the wider national conversation over sustainable livestock management, farmer-herder relations and the balance between agricultural production, public order and the rights of livestock owners.
