PDP Mobilizes Grassroots Support in Kwara, Targets APC Stronghold.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State has intensified its grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections, organising a mega rally across several communities to canvass support for its candidates.
The rally, held on Saturday, October 10, attracted party members, community leaders, traders, transport workers, youths, women and other residents who joined the procession through major parts of the local government area. The exercise was organised to sensitise voters, strengthen the party’s grassroots presence and appreciate supporters ahead of the forthcoming elections.
The procession began at Omoda Roundabout and passed through Odeadana, Alore, Oloje, Itamerin, Pakata, Idigba, Gaa Aremu and Adeta before moving through Agbo Oba, Surulere, Adabata and Agaka. It eventually concluded at Oja Oba, near the palace of the Emir of Ilorin.
According to News report, PDP members from the 12 political wards in Ilorin West participated in the rally. The crowd reportedly grew as the procession moved through the communities, with additional residents joining along the route.
The rally was convened by the PDP Chairman in Ilorin West Local Government Area, Mallam Abdulkadir Issa, and members of his executive committee. Issa commended party members for their commitment and mobilisation efforts, while expressing appreciation to residents for the reception accorded the procession.
He described the turnout in communities such as Pakata, Idigba and Adeta as an encouraging sign for the party’s grassroots mobilisation efforts ahead of the 2027 elections.
The event also provided an opportunity for the party to promote its candidates across different levels of government. Those mentioned included its governorship candidate, Engineer Sulaiman Bolakale Kawu; Kwara Central senatorial candidate, Senator Saliu Mustapha; and House of Representatives candidate for Asa/Ilorin West Federal Constituency, Professor Abdulfatai Aremu.
The party’s candidates for the two State House of Assembly constituencies in Ilorin West, Abdulhammed Tunji and Mallam Alfanla, were also presented as part of the mobilisation effort.
Speaking at the rally, Tunji thanked party members and residents for their participation, promising that a PDP led government would bring new ideas, purposeful leadership and policies aimed at improving living standards.
Similarly, the PDP Chairman in Kwara Central Senatorial District, Alhaji Isiaka Babatunde Owolabi, described the party as an alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.
Owolabi attributed what he described as growing support for the PDP to dissatisfaction with the APC administration’s performance. He accused the government of being disconnected from the concerns of ordinary residents, although the claims represent the opposition party’s assessment and have not been independently established.
He further pledged that a PDP government would prioritize inclusive governance, security and development while working to strengthen Kwara State’s reputation as a peaceful environment.
The rally comes amid political realignments in Kwara State as parties consolidate their structures and seek to attract voters ahead of the 2027 general elections. The PDP has been working to strengthen its position through grassroots engagement, political alliances and mobilisation across local government areas.
However, the size of a rally alone does not establish a party’s wider electoral popularity or guarantee success at the polls. The extent to which the PDP can convert its mobilisation efforts into votes will depend on its organisation, candidates, campaign promises and voters’ assessment of competing parties.
With the 2027 elections approaching, political activities in Kwara are expected to intensify as the PDP and APC seek to consolidate their support bases and persuade residents to back their respective candidates.
