Prichard Colón Dies at 33, 11 Years After Boxing Injury That Changed His Life.

Former Puerto Rican professional boxer Prichard Colón has died at the age of 33, nearly 11 years after a devastating brain injury suffered during a 2015 bout left him with profound neurological damage.

Colón’s father and former trainer, Richard Colón, announced his son’s death on Thursday, August 13, 2026, in a social media post. His family did not immediately disclose a specific medical cause of death. Major international outlets, including Al Jazeera, ABC News Australia, and The New York Post, have reported his passing.

Colón’s boxing career was cut short following his October 17, 2015, fight against American boxer Terrel Williams at EagleBank Arena in Fairfax, Virginia. At the time, the Puerto Rican was unbeaten with a professional record of 16 victories from 16 fights, including 13 wins by knockout. During the bout, Colón was repeatedly struck by punches to the back of the head, commonly referred to in boxing as “rabbit punches,” which are prohibited under the sport’s rules.

After the fight, Colón became seriously ill and collapsed in the dressing room. He was diagnosed with a subdural hematoma and required emergency brain surgery. He subsequently spent 221 days in a coma before emerging with severe and permanent neurological impairment that required extensive long-term care.

The tragedy surrounding Colón’s injury also prompted renewed scrutiny of boxer safety and the enforcement of rules against illegal blows. In 2016, the World Boxing Council introduced what became known as the “Prichard Colón Rule,” calling for stricter enforcement and zero tolerance toward rabbit punches. The WBC later honoured Colón as an honorary champion in recognition of his courage and prolonged struggle.

For more than a decade, Colón’s family remained at the centre of his care and rehabilitation efforts. His story became one of the most widely recognized examples of the potentially life altering consequences of traumatic brain injuries in combat sports. His death has now renewed attention on the importance of medical safeguards, officiating standards and stronger protections for boxers inside the ring.

Colón’s passing marks the end of a life that began with the promise of a major boxing career but was fundamentally altered by one fight. His legacy extends beyond his record in the ring, serving as a lasting reminder of the risks professional fighters face and the continuing need for effective enforcement of safety rules in boxing.
