  • The Edo State Government has debunked claims by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) alleging that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved N6 billion as compensation to so-called “Fulani terrorists” following the recent Uromi killings. In a strongly-worded statement on Thursday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, described the accusation as a reckless falsehood designed to incite ethnic conflict and destabilise the peace of Edo State. The controversy stems from the events of 28 March, when sixteen hunters from Kano State were killed in the Udune Efandion community of Uromi. In the aftermath, Governor Okpebholo visited Kano to sympathise with the families of the victims and appeal for calm, while a delegation from Kano later travelled to Edo to engage in peace discussions. IPOB, in a statement released on 21 April, alleged that the Governor had secretly approved a N6 billion compensation package to appease the bereaved families a claim which the Edo State Government swiftly dismissed as baseless and inflammatory. “There is no truth whatsoever in the claim that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved or paid N6 billion to any group,” Itua said. “This is a fictitious and malicious lie concocted by IPOB to sow seeds of discord and destabilise the harmony we have nurtured in Edo State.” The government warned that IPOB’s repeated attempts to manipulate public sentiment and incite ethnic hostility under the cover of activism would not succeed in Edo State. “It has become a known tactic of this proscribed group to exploit tragic situations to spread hate and misinformation,” the statement added. “Their agenda of violence and ethnic disintegration has no place here.” Emphasising its commitment to unity, security and justice for all residents, the Edo State Government reaffirmed its stance against any form of ethnic or religious discrimination. The statement also urged security agencies to investigate the source of the inciting publication and prosecute those behind it, stressing that public order and peace must not be jeopardised by dangerous propaganda. “We remain resolute in our commitment to justice, peace and the protection of all Edo people, regardless of background,” the government declared. “We will continue to uphold the values of unity, tolerance and truth in the face of reckless attempts to destabilise our state.”

Paris Saint-Germain defeated Barcelona 4–2 in a thrilling UEFA Champions League encounter while Liverpool recovered from a two-goal deficit to beat Villarreal 4–3. Manchester City and Napoli also secured victories on a goal-filled night across Europe.

PSG produced a decisive late surge at the Parc des Princes after Barcelona twice fought back to level the contest. Désiré Doué opened the scoring in the 38th minute before Xavi Espart equalised for the visitors shortly after half-time.

Lucas Hernández restored PSG’s lead in the 72nd minute, but Lamine Yamal responded seven minutes later to make it 2–2. Vitinha struck in the 81st minute before Fabián Ruiz completed the scoring in the 86th, securing a fourth consecutive goal for the hosts in a match that kept supporters on edge until the closing stages.

The victory continued PSG’s strong start to the league phase and followed their 4–2 win over Manchester City earlier in the competition.

Liverpool delivered another dramatic performance at Anfield, overturning a 2–0 deficit to defeat Villarreal 4–3.

Georges Mikautadze gave Villarreal an early advantage before Sergi Cardona doubled the visitors’ lead in the 29th minute. Liverpool responded through Alexis Mac Allister in the 36th minute, while Ronald Araújo’s own goal in first-half stoppage time brought the teams level.

Mac Allister scored again in the 65th minute to put Liverpool ahead, and Florian Wirtz extended the advantage four minutes later. Tani Oluwaseyi reduced the deficit in the 87th minute, but Liverpool held on to maintain their perfect start to the league phase.

Manchester City enjoyed a comfortable evening at the Etihad Stadium, defeating AEK Athens 5–1.

Elliot Anderson opened the scoring in the 12th minute before Phil Foden doubled City’s lead in the 34th. AEK briefly threatened a comeback when Stavros Pilios scored in the 52nd minute, but Rayan Cherki restored the two-goal cushion five minutes later.

Foden then completed his hat-trick with goals in the 65th and 76th minutes, giving City an emphatic victory.

Napoli defeated Norwegian side Bodø/Glimt 4–3 in another high-scoring encounter. The Italian club secured all three points in a closely contested match, recovering from their previous 3–1 defeat against Villarreal.

Elsewhere, Roma recorded a commanding 4–0 victory over Slovan Bratislava. Mario Hermoso and Nahuel Molina scored in the first half before Niccolò Pisilli and Donyell Malen, from the penalty spot, added two more after the break.

PSV Eindhoven defeated Porto 1–0 through Guus Til’s 57th-minute goal, while Borussia Dortmund beat Sabah 2–1, with Serhou Guirassy scoring twice.

Fenerbahçe were held to a 2–2 draw by Slavia Prague after conceding a late equaliser. Stuttgart and Atlético Madrid also shared the points following a 1–1 draw in Germany.

The nine fixtures produced 40 goals, underlining the attacking intensity of the Champions League league phase. Attention now turns to Wednesday’s fixtures, which include Bayern Munich against Arsenal and Real Madrid against RB Leipzig.

PSG beat Barcelona 4–2 as Liverpool defeated Villarreal 4–3, while Manchester City, Napoli, Roma, PSV and Borussia Dortmund recorded Champions League victories.
