Rivers Police Arrest Officers Caught Extorting Motorists in Viral Video, Launch Comprehensive Investigation.

The Rivers State Police Command has arrested officers allegedly involved in the extortion of motorists after a viral video surfaced online showing the misconduct, prompting widespread public outrage and renewed concerns over accountability within Nigeria’s policing system.

According to the command, the officers identified in the video have been taken into custody and are currently undergoing disciplinary procedures as authorities commence a full scale investigation into the incident. The development follows the circulation of footage on social media that appeared to show police personnel unlawfully demanding money from road users in Rivers State.

Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, assured residents that the command remains committed to professionalism, transparency, and ethical policing. He emphasized that any officer found guilty of misconduct would face appropriate sanctions in accordance with the law and the regulations governing the Nigeria Police Force.

The police chief noted that the command views extortion, abuse of office, and other forms of unprofessional conduct as serious violations that undermine public trust and damage efforts to strengthen community policing. He reiterated the command’s determination to hold erring personnel accountable while encouraging citizens to continue reporting incidents of misconduct through official complaint channels.

The incident has reignited national conversations about police reform, accountability, and the need for sustained oversight of law enforcement officers across Nigeria. Civil society groups and members of the public have repeatedly called for stronger disciplinary mechanisms to address corruption and abuse within the security sector.

Security analysts say swift action against officers implicated in misconduct is essential to rebuilding confidence between law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve. They argue that transparent investigations and consistent enforcement of disciplinary measures are critical to improving public perception of policing in the country.

The Rivers State Police Command has urged members of the public to remain law-abiding and cooperate with investigators as the probe continues. Authorities have also assured residents that the outcome of the investigation will be made public in line with principles of accountability and justice.
