The Nigeria Police Force has officially reactivated its nationwide Tinted Glass Permit (TGP) system, introducing a modernised, digital application platform aimed at addressing security risks and improving public trust in law enforcement.
Announced via a press release dated 30th April 2025, the initiative, directed by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, follows growing public complaints about the harassment of motorists over the use of tinted vehicle windows. It also seeks to regulate the increasing number of factory-fitted tinted windows in modern vehicles.
According to the police, tinted vehicles have often served as a cover for criminal activities such as kidnapping, armed robbery, and various scams, obstructing police visibility and complicating enforcement efforts. The revived permit system aims to clearly distinguish legitimate users including those with verified medical needs or security personnel from individuals exploiting tinted vehicles for unlawful purposes.
The TGP process will now be conducted entirely online through the Police Specialised Services Automation Project (POSSAP) portal at https://www.possap.gov.ng. The digital process integrates identity verification via the National Identification Number (NIN) and Tax Identification Number (TIN), along with biometric data capture and background checks. Successful applicants will receive a QR-coded digital permit within 72 hours of application.
To allow for adjustment, a 30-day grace period starting 1st May 2025 has been approved. The police cautioned that enforcement of the new system would begin once this period elapses, warning that any officers found to be engaging in misconduct, extortion, or harassment during implementation would face strict disciplinary sanctions.
In the statement, Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, mnipr, mipra, fCAI, reaffirmed the police’s commitment to citizen-focused, technology-driven policing. He encouraged the public to comply with the new system for safer roads and a more secure national environment.
The move forms part of wider efforts by the police authorities to strengthen investigative capacity, combat criminal exploitation of tinted vehicles, and reassure citizens through enhanced transparency and accountability.
