Several members of a private security group linked to Yoruba Nation agitator Sunday Adeyemo, aka Sunday Igboho, were reportedly injured after an ambush by suspected bandits in Old Oyo National Park, Oyo State.
The incident occurred on June 26, 2026, during an operation by the Iru Ekun security outfit. The team had deployed surveillance drones to track suspected kidnappers and armed criminals believed to be hiding in the forest reserve.
According to sources, the operation turned violent when heavily armed men, suspected to be cross-border criminal networks, opened fire on the advancing operatives. A gun battle followed inside the forest, leaving several Iru Ekun members with gunshot wounds
The attack has renewed concerns over the activities of kidnappers, bandits and other armed groups operating in forests and remote communities across the South-West.
Efforts to get a response from the Oyo State Police Command were unsuccessful, as calls to spokesperson DSP Olayinka Ayanlade were not answered.
