Reported by Musa Antiketu,| Journalist at Obaland magazine.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate in Sokoto State, Manir Muhammad Dan’iya, has expressed deep sorrow over the deadly boat accident at Gorau community in Goronyo Local Government Area, calling for an urgent and coordinated response from government and emergency authorities.

The tragedy occurred as a canoe carrying farmers and other passengers to rice farms capsized shortly after departure. Initial official accounts put the number of passengers at 77, although the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) separately estimated that about 82 people were aboard.

Casualty figures have continued to change as rescue and recovery operations progressed. The Sokoto State Police Command initially reported 46 bodies recovered, seven survivors and 24 people missing. Local reports subsequently placed the death toll at 53, underscoring the continuing uncertainty surrounding the final casualty figure.

Dan’iya, a former deputy governor of Sokoto State and the ADC’s 2027 governorship candidate, described the incident as a devastating tragedy. Through his media aide, Aminu Abdullahi, he extended condolences to the families of victims, the Gorau community, Goronyo Local Government Area and residents across Sokoto State.

He also urged the Sokoto State Government and relevant emergency agencies to deploy additional rescue personnel, medical teams and equipment to the affected area, particularly to support survivors and intensify efforts to locate missing passengers. Leadership reported that many of those believed to have been aboard were children and farm workers travelling to rice-producing areas.

The disaster has renewed concerns about the safety of Nigeria’s inland waterways, where overcrowding, inadequate safety equipment and weak enforcement of navigation regulations have repeatedly contributed to fatal accidents. NIWA’s Sokoto area manager, Abdulkadir Yusuf, attributed the latest incident to alleged overloading, negligence and violations of established safety rules, while confirming that emergency agencies and local volunteers were involved in rescue operations.

The tragedy also comes against the backdrop of wider insecurity affecting rural communities in Sokoto. Dan’iya has previously raised concerns about killings, kidnappings and displacement in the state, including attacks that have forced residents to abandon some communities. Vanguard, through an allAfrica republishing, reported in July that he called for urgent action after residents of communities in Danchadi District, Bodinga Local Government Area, reportedly fled their homes because of persistent insecurity.

The overlapping challenges of insecurity and inadequate rural infrastructure have broader implications for farmers and other residents who depend on waterways and difficult transport routes to access farms and markets. The Gorau tragedy therefore extends beyond the immediate loss of life, raising questions about transportation safety, rural connectivity, emergency preparedness and the protection of vulnerable communities.

The incident is another reminder that preventing avoidable deaths requires more than emergency intervention after disasters occur. Stronger enforcement of passenger limits, compulsory use of life jackets, safer boats, trained operators, improved river crossings and better access to rural communities are among the measures that could reduce the risks associated with inland water transportation.

For Sokoto residents affected by the tragedy, however, the immediate priority remains the recovery of missing passengers, care for survivors and support for bereaved families.

Obaland magazine will continue to monitor official updates as authorities reconcile casualty figures and conclude rescue and recovery operations.
