Suspected Arson Sparks Major Fire at Anambra Diesel Storage Facility, Leaves One Seriously Burnt.
A suspected arson attack on a diesel storage facility in Nnewi, Anambra State, has left one person seriously burnt and destroyed several storage tanks and other property, raising fresh concerns about petroleum storage safety and emergency preparedness.
The incident occurred on Sunday evening, November 1, 2026, at Ndieze Nwankwo, along Edibros Road, Uruagu, in Nnewi North Local Government Area.
The fire reportedly triggered panic among residents and business operators in the surrounding area, with eyewitnesses describing thick smoke and explosions as the flames engulfed several tanks containing diesel.
According to reports, the injured individual was immediately rushed to a hospital for medical attention. No death was recorded.
Confirming the incident on Monday, November 2, the Head of the Media and Publicity Unit of the Anambra State Fire Service, Chukwudi Chiketa, disclosed that the agency received a distress call at approximately 5:45 p.m. on Sunday.
Chiketa explained that firefighters were immediately deployed to the location and successfully contained the blaze, preventing it from spreading to surrounding properties.
He stated that some of the storage tanks were affected by the fire, while firefighting operations were concluded at approximately 8:58 p.m.
On the suspected cause, the Fire Service said the incident was believed to be a case of arson following allegations that an unidentified individual deliberately set the facility ablaze.
However, the agency emphasized that the actual cause of the fire had not been established and remained subject to investigation. No suspect or motive had been officially identified in the available reports.
The incident highlights the potential dangers associated with storing combustible petroleum products, particularly in areas where commercial and residential activities exist close to one another.
Diesel storage facilities require appropriate safety measures, including proper handling procedures, fire prevention equipment and effective emergency-response arrangements to minimize the risk of accidents and protect surrounding communities.
The Anambra State Fire Service has consequently urged residents and petroleum product handlers to exercise caution when storing and handling petroleum products.
The agency also encouraged members of the public to report fire emergencies promptly to enable firefighters to respond quickly and reduce potential casualties and property damage.
As investigations into the suspected arson continue, attention remains on establishing the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensuring that appropriate safety measures are maintained at petroleum storage facilities across the state.
