Tesla Unveils Flying Roadster as Elon Musk Targets 2028 Production.
American electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla has unveiled a redesigned version of its long awaited Roadster sports car, attracting global attention with a demonstration of rocket-inspired technology that allowed the vehicle to perform brief aerial manoeuvres.
The vehicle was showcased on October 15, 2026, at a SpaceX testing facility in Texas. During the demonstration, the Roadster drove along an inverted ramp, flipped in mid air and landed using thruster technology developed in collaboration with SpaceX. The prototype also demonstrated the ability to jump over other vehicles, highlighting Tesla’s ambitions to combine electric vehicle engineering with aerospace technology.
Tesla Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk described the vehicle as a glimpse into the future of transportation. The company also claimed that the Roadster could accelerate from zero to 60 miles per hour in less than one second. However, the demonstration featured brief aerial movements rather than sustained flight, leaving questions about the vehicle’s practical capabilities and whether the technology could be safely adapted for everyday use.
Despite the excitement surrounding the unveiling, the vehicle is not yet ready for commercial use. Tesla has announced plans to begin production in 2028, following years of delays since the next-generation Roadster was first announced in 2017. The company has also indicated that the rocket equipped version would not be approved for public road use, raising questions about its regulatory status, safety requirements and long-term commercial prospects.
The unveiling represents another attempt by Tesla to showcase its technological ambitions as competition intensifies across the electric vehicle and advanced mobility industries. While the demonstration has generated considerable interest, the Roadster’s ultimate success will depend on whether Tesla can turn its ambitious prototype into a practical, safe and commercially viable vehicle.
