President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his re-election, expressing Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation across key economic and diplomatic sectors.
Tinubu conveyed his congratulations in a personally signed message issued in Abuja on Monday, October 26, 2026, describing Lula’s renewed mandate as an opportunity to deepen the longstanding friendship and historical ties between Nigeria and Brazil.
“I congratulate my friend, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil, on his re-election for a record fourth term,” Tinubu said.
The Nigerian president noted that both countries, as influential members of the Global South, could work together to promote economic integration and advance shared interests amid changes in the international order.
He identified trade and investment, agriculture and food security, energy, oil and gas, manufacturing, science and technology, education, aviation and cultural exchange as priority areas for expanded bilateral cooperation.
According to Tinubu, stronger collaboration across these sectors could create opportunities for economic growth, deepen commercial relations and strengthen ties between the two countries.
The Nigerian leader also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to working with Brazil on multilateral cooperation and shared priorities affecting Africa, South America and the wider Global South.
“I affirm Nigeria’s continued commitment to working with Brazil to strengthen multilateral cooperation and advance shared priorities in Africa, South America, and across the Global South,” he stated.
Tinubu concluded by conveying the goodwill of the Nigerian government and people to Lula, wishing the Brazilian president a successful new term in office.
Lula, 80, secured a fourth, non-consecutive term in Brazil’s presidential election on Sunday, October 25, defeating Senator Flávio Bolsonaro in a closely contested runoff.
Official figures released by Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court showed that Lula won 51.79 per cent of valid votes, equivalent to 64,256,232 votes, while Bolsonaro received 48.21 per cent, or 59,826,041 votes.
Lula’s re-election provides an opportunity for Nigeria and Brazil to pursue closer diplomatic engagement and stronger economic ties, particularly in trade, agriculture, energy and technology.
The two countries’ cooperation could also support broader engagement between African and South American nations on development, investment and international affairs.
