“Tinubu Defends NYSC Reforms, Says New Initiative Will Equip Nigerian Youth With Practical Skills for National Development”

ABUJA, Nigeria  President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has defended his administration’s recent reforms to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), describing the changes as a strategic effort to empower young Nigerians with practical skills needed to drive economic growth, innovation, and national development.

Speaking during a recent engagement, President Tinubu said the reforms are designed to reposition the NYSC beyond its traditional orientation by placing greater emphasis on vocational training, entrepreneurship, digital innovation, agriculture, and other productive sectors capable of creating employment opportunities for graduates.

According to the President, Nigeria’s growing youth population represents one of the country’s greatest assets, making it essential for government policies to equip graduates with market relevant skills that will enable them to contribute meaningfully to the economy. He stressed that strengthening youth capacity remains central to his administration’s broader economic transformation agenda.

Tinubu noted that the reforms align with ongoing efforts to reduce unemployment, promote self-reliance, and encourage innovation among young Nigerians. He added that by expanding opportunities for skills acquisition and enterprise development during the service year, corps members would be better positioned to create jobs rather than depend solely on public sector employment.

The administration has consistently argued that modernizing the NYSC is necessary to reflect evolving labour market realities and the country’s long-term development priorities. The proposed changes are expected to deepen partnerships with public institutions, private sector organisations, and technical training providers to enhance the quality of learning available to corps members.

Policy analysts have described the reforms as part of wider government initiatives aimed at improving human capital development, although they also emphasized that successful implementation will depend on adequate funding, infrastructure, and sustained collaboration with relevant stakeholders.

The NYSC, established in 1973 to promote national unity and integration after the Nigerian Civil War, remains one of Nigeria’s most significant youth development programmes. Successive administrations have periodically reviewed the scheme to improve its relevance in addressing contemporary socio economic challenges.
