A 59-year-old grandfather was tragically killed by an elephant at South Africa’s Kruger National Park on Saturday while trying to save his grandchildren from the charging animal.
The incident occurred near the park’s Malelane Gate when the family was taking photos and videos of the elephant. The animal suddenly charged, prompting the man’s two grandchildren, aged five and 11, to flee.
The elephant struck the 11-year-old boy with its trunk, and the grandfather attempted to assist him. Unfortunately, the elephant turned and trampled the grandfather, resulting in his death.
The 11-year-old boy sustained a leg injury and was transported to a hospital for treatment. The park’s management has appealed to witnesses to respect the family’s grief by refraining from sharing photos or videos of the tragedy.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and park officials have emphasized the importance of adhering to safety guidelines when interacting with wild animals. This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the dangers associated with close encounters with wildlife.
