Tragic Suicide of a Mother of Two Highlights Domestic Abuse

In a heart-wrenching incident, Margaret Atayi, a mother of two, was found dead on  after being reported missing from her parents’ home in Mararaba, Nasarawa State since Thursday night. It is alleged that Margaret took her own life as a result of the distress caused by her failed marriage and mistreatment by her husband.

Confirming the cause of her daughter’s death, Mr. Patrick Atayi, the bereaved father, revealed that Margaret had been battling depression for some time due to the mistreatment she endured in her marriage. “Margaret was a mother of two children. She has been in depression for some time now due to mistreatment by her husband. She went out on that fateful Friday morning at 3 am without the knowledge of anybody. Her body was discovered in the late hours of Monday, and every available evidence confirmed that she committed suicide,” Mr. Atayi disclosed.

When contacted, Margaret’s mother, Mrs. Helen Atayi, confirmed her daughter’s depressed state and the alleged mistreatment by her husband with a simple “Yes.” Mrs. Atayi had previously informed reporters that Margaret, who was married with two children, left their home at City College in Abacha Road, Nasarawa State, without informing any family member.

The local police authorities were also contacted for their statement on the matter. The Police Public Relations Officer of the FCT Police Command, Josephine Adeh, directed the inquiry to the Nasarawa State Police Command. However, attempts to reach the PPRO for the Nasarawa State Police Command, Ramhan Nansel, were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
