WASHINGTON — United States President Donald Trump don sign executive order wey go make federal government change Lake Ontario name to Lake America, as di relationship between Washington and Ottawa dey get more wahala.

Trump sign di order for Thursday, August 27, 2026, wey tell di U.S. Department of di Interior and di Board on Geographic Names make dem start to change am to Lake America for federal records, maps, databases and other official government references. Di order give di Interior Department 30 days to carry out di necessary administrative process.

Dis decision go affect one big body of water wey United States and Canada dey share. Lake Ontario dey border New York State for di south and east and Ontario province for di north and west, make di name change matter very sensitive because di lake no dey only for U.S. territory.

Trump talk say di move na recognition of wetin him administration dey call America’s contribution to protect and maintain access to di Great Lakes. Di executive order argue say U.S. investment and security measures, including di role of di U.S. Coast Guard for maintaining commercial shipping routes, fit justify di new name.

But di order no give di U.S. government power to force Canada, international organisations or foreign governments to accept di new name. Canadian authorities don reject di proposed change and still dey call di body of water Lake Ontario. Reuters report say di move dey apply to U.S. federal usage and no go change Canada’s name for am.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney don dismiss di renaming, point to di lake’s long-standing Indigenous origins and historical importance. Canadian officials don stress say di name Ontario don dey before both di modern Canadian state and di United States as e dey now.

Di wahala dey happen as trade relations between di two North American neighbours dey worsen. Washington and Ottawa don dey involved for series of disputes wey concern tariffs and trade negotiations, with di latest disagreement adding symbolic and diplomatic matter to di economic confrontation. Reuters and The Guardian both link Trump’s decision to di broader wahala for U.S.–Canada relations.

Di proposed renaming don also face resistance inside di United States. New York Governor Kathy Hochul don talk say di state go still dey use “Lake Ontario,” while other Great Lakes governors don publicly question or mock di decision.

Di move follow Trump’s earlier decision to tell di U.S. government to use “Gulf of America” instead of di Gulf of Mexico for federal references. Di latest order na another example of di administration wey dey use executive authority to change di official U.S. terminology for important geographical landmarks.

For Canada, di matter pass just name. Indigenous representatives don criticise di proposed change, dey argue say to replace di historic name fit risk ignoring di cultural heritage wey dey associated with di lake. Di leader of di Seneca Nation don also criticise Trump’s order, dey cite di historical and Indigenous importance of di existing name.

Despite di U.S. executive order, Lake Ontario’s internationally recognised name still dey contested, and to adopt am as Lake America outside U.S. federal institutions no dey guaranteed. Major mapping companies and Canadian authorities no dey automatically bound by di U.S. directive.

Di development show how geographical naming fit dey mixed with national identity, diplomacy and political messaging. While Trump’s order change di terminology wey di U.S. federal government suppose use, e no fit alone determine wetin Canada, Indigenous nations, international institutions or di wider global community go call di lake.

For Obaland magazine, di dispute highlight di broader reality for international affairs: even decisions wey look symbolic wey concern names and maps fit carry significant historical, cultural and diplomatic implications when dem concern shared territory and Indigenous heritage.
