US President Donald Trump has warned that the United States could face unrest similar to the violence witnessed in France if Democrats make gains in the November 3, 2026, midterm elections.
Trump made the remarks during a campaign rally in Park City, Kansas, where he was campaigning for Republican Senator Roger Marshall ahead of a competitive Senate race.
Pointing to the recent protests, riots and looting in France, Trump urged voters to consider the potential consequences of the election. He blamed the unrest on migrants, jihadists and communists, arguing that similar developments could occur in the United States under Democratic leadership.
“When you see burning steeples and raging fires in France, just remember that is what the radical Democrats want to do to America,” Trump said, according to a transcript of his remarks.
The unrest in France has involved large demonstrations over deteriorating school conditions, rising living costs and broader economic grievances. Although many demonstrators initially protested peacefully, some groups engaged in arson, looting and clashes with security forces.
However, Trump’s claims linking the violence primarily to immigration and Democratic policies remain his political interpretation of the events. This has attributed the French demonstrations to domestic concerns over education, living costs, inequality and public spending, while noting that some violent groups exploited the protests.
Trump’s remarks reflect the growing prominence of immigration, public security and national identity in the US midterm campaign. Republicans are seeking to maintain their congressional strength, while Democrats are campaigning on issues including affordability and the cost of living.
The November 3 elections will determine the next composition of Congress and shape the political environment for the remainder of Trump’s presidency.
