The Chief Medical Director of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu, has led members of the hospital’s management team on a condolence visit to the family of Pastor Chris Oyakhilome following the death of his mother, Deaconess Angel Oyakhilome, at the age of 88.
The condolence visit took place in Benin City on Friday, October 2, 2026, following the passing of the late Deaconess, who was widely known within her family and church community as “Big Mummy.”
During the visit, Prof. Ize-Iyamu described the death of the family matriarch as a loss to her loved ones while expressing the belief that her transition represented “heaven’s gain.”
The UBTH Chief Medical Director paid tribute to Deaconess Angel Oyakhilome, describing her as a devoted Christian who lived a meaningful and impactful life and attained an advanced age surrounded by her children and grandchildren.
“Mama has gone to be with Jesus. She lived a good life. She lived to see her children and grandchildren. On behalf of the UBTH, please accept our condolences and extend our heartfelt condolences to Pastor Chris Oyakhilome,” Prof. Ize-Iyamu said.
As part of the visit, the CMD signed the condolence register and presented a formal letter of condolence to the bereaved family on behalf of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital.
The delegation was received on behalf of the family by Pastor B. Akhuemokhan, the eldest daughter of the deceased, with Pastor Henry Amenkhienan conveying her appreciation for the visit and the expression of sympathy from the hospital management.
The UBTH delegation included the hospital’s Director of Administration, Jim Uwadiae, Esq.; Deputy Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee (Clinicals), Dr. Philip Osho; Head of Corporate Services, Prof. Dumebi Kayoma; Head of Transport, Mr. Abure Pedro; and Mr. Iyore Clement, among other members of the hospital management team.
Deaconess Angel Oyakhilome was born on March 6, 1938, and died on the morning of Friday, September 25, 2026, at the age of 88.
Her passing has drawn condolences from family members, associates and members of the Christian community, as relatives continue to mourn her death and reflect on her life and legacy.
For the Oyakhilome family, the condolence visit by the UBTH management represents an expression of institutional solidarity at a time of bereavement and an acknowledgement of the life of a woman remembered for her faith, family and years of service to those around her.
