The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) has introduced a modern day room at Ward A4 to improve patients’ comfort, social interaction and overall well-being during hospitalisation.
The facility, provided under the leadership of the hospital’s Chief Medical Director, Professor Idia Ize-Iyamu, is designed to give patients a comfortable, homelike environment away from their individual hospital rooms.
The shared space allows patients who are able to walk around safely to relax, interact with others, read books and watch television. The initiative also seeks to address the boredom and feelings of isolation that can accompany prolonged hospital stays.
According to the information provided about the facility, the initiative reflects a broader approach to healthcare that recognises the importance of patients’ emotional and social well-being alongside their clinical treatment.
Professor Ize-Iyamu emphasised the value of shared experiences in supporting the recovery process, noting that the day room creates opportunities for patients from different bays and wards to interact and build connections.
Beyond providing recreational opportunities, the facility offers patients a change of environment from the routine of hospital beds and individual rooms. Such spaces can contribute to a more comfortable hospital experience by encouraging social engagement and helping patients maintain a sense of dignity during recovery.
However, the day room is intended for patients who can safely access the shared space, while individual medical needs and clinical instructions remain important considerations.
The development highlights the role of patient-centred care in modern healthcare delivery, where the hospital environment is considered an important part of the overall treatment experience.
As healthcare institutions continue to explore ways to improve patient satisfaction, initiatives such as the UBTH day room demonstrate an effort to make hospital stays more supportive, humane and responsive to patients’ needs.
