UNICAL Tightens Security as Management Bans Wild Graduation Celebrations, Warns Against Cult Activities.

The management of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) has reiterated its ban on unruly post-examination and graduation celebrations, warning students against activities capable of disrupting peace and security on campus.

The directive is part of renewed efforts to maintain order within the university community as students conclude academic activities and graduating students prepare for the next phase of their lives. Management has cautioned against reckless celebrations, excessive noise, dangerous displays and other forms of conduct considered disruptive or potentially threatening to public safety.

The university has also reaffirmed its zero tolerance position on cult related activities and other forms of criminal behaviour. Students have been urged to avoid gatherings, rituals or associations that could expose them to disciplinary or legal consequences.

The renewed warning comes amid growing concerns across Nigeria over unruly “sign out” and graduation celebrations in schools and higher institutions. Several institutions and government authorities have recently moved to restrict such activities, citing concerns over public safety, disorder, financial pressure and the risk of criminal conduct.

UNICAL has previously maintained a firm stance against cultism and other anti social behaviour. In November 2025, the university’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Offiong Effanga Offiong, warned newly admitted students against cultism, drug abuse, examination malpractice and internet fraud, stressing that violations of institutional regulations could attract serious sanctions.

The university’s latest position also comes as UNICAL continues to emphasise discipline and institutional order. The institution recently held its 38th Convocation Ceremony, graduating thousands of undergraduate and postgraduate students in a series of officially organized academic events.

Management has therefore urged students to celebrate responsibly and comply fully with university regulations, stressing that maintaining peace and security remains a collective responsibility. Students found violating the directives may face disciplinary action in accordance with the university’s rules and applicable laws.
