University of Benin Teaching Hospital Upgrades Paediatric Clinic as CMD Idia Nibokun Ize-Iyamu Commissions Renovated Facility

The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) has commissioned its newly renovated Paediatric Outpatient (POP) Reception and Nurses Bay, marking a significant step in efforts to enhance child healthcare services at the facility.

The Chief Medical Director, Prof. Idia Nibokun Ize-Iyamu, officially unveiled the upgraded sections on Monday, March 2, 2026, describing the project as a strategic reinvestment in patient-centered care.

Prof. Ize-Iyamu explained that the renovation was funded through the hospital’s internally generated revenue from patient services, underscoring UBTH’s commitment to ploughing back resources into service improvement.

She clarified that the project is separate from the ₦2.5 billion legacy initiative approved by the Edo State Government for the construction of a modern Paediatric Centre, which is expected to significantly transform paediatric healthcare delivery at the hospital.

According to the CMD, the decision to renovate the reception and waiting areas was driven by the urgent need to create a more welcoming and functional environment for children and their caregivers.

“With these improvements, our young patients and their families will now be received in a more inviting and child-friendly space designed to reduce anxiety and enhance comfort,” she said.
The upgraded clinic features redesigned seating, improved lighting, and an ambiance tailored to meet the needs of children.

The Nurses Bay was also significantly enhanced to facilitate more efficient service delivery and better patient care.
Prof. Ize-Iyamu commended staff of the Paediatric Department for their dedication and support throughout the renovation process.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by hospital management, staff, dignitaries, and members of the community, who described the development as a milestone in UBTH’s ongoing drive to improve healthcare outcomes for children in the region.
