US Elevates Israeli Espionage Risk to ‘Critical’ Amid Growing Intelligence Concerns

The United States Department of Defense has reportedly raised its counterintelligence threat assessment for Israel to “critical,” the highest level in its internal classification system, amid concerns over alleged Israeli intelligence activities targeting senior American officials.

According to reports by NBC News and other international media outlets, the Pentagon’s Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) issued the upgraded assessment following growing concerns that Israeli intelligence agencies may have intensified efforts to obtain information related to the administration’s internal deliberations on key Middle East conflicts, including ongoing tensions involving Iran and Lebanon.

The reported development marks a significant moment in relations between two long standing strategic allies. US officials cited by international media said the heightened threat designation reflects concerns about both human intelligence operations and technical surveillance capabilities allegedly linked to Israel. Some reports indicate that senior American policymakers involved in Middle East diplomacy and security discussions may have been among the targets of intelligence gathering efforts.

The assessment comes against the backdrop of increasing policy differences between Washington and Jerusalem over the direction of regional conflicts and diplomatic engagement with Iran. Analysts note that intelligence collection among allied nations is not uncommon, but US officials reportedly expressed concern that recent activities may have exceeded what is typically expected between partner countries.

Israel has strongly denied the allegations. The Israeli Embassy in Washington described claims of espionage against US government officials as “completely false,” maintaining that Israeli intelligence efforts are directed toward hostile actors rather than allied governments. The White House has also disputed aspects of the reports, with officials reportedly rejecting the characterization of the situation and questioning the accuracy of the claims.

While neither the Pentagon nor the Defense Intelligence Agency has publicly released details of the reported assessment, the controversy has drawn renewed attention to the complex intelligence relationship between the United States and Israel. Despite the reported concerns, both countries continue to maintain extensive military, security, and intelligence cooperation across multiple strategic fronts.

As geopolitical tensions in the Middle East remain high, the reported reassessment underscores the delicate balance between strategic partnership and national security interests, even among the closest international allies.
