  • The Edo State Government has debunked claims by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) alleging that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved N6 billion as compensation to so-called “Fulani terrorists” following the recent Uromi killings. In a strongly-worded statement on Thursday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, described the accusation as a reckless falsehood designed to incite ethnic conflict and destabilise the peace of Edo State. The controversy stems from the events of 28 March, when sixteen hunters from Kano State were killed in the Udune Efandion community of Uromi. In the aftermath, Governor Okpebholo visited Kano to sympathise with the families of the victims and appeal for calm, while a delegation from Kano later travelled to Edo to engage in peace discussions. IPOB, in a statement released on 21 April, alleged that the Governor had secretly approved a N6 billion compensation package to appease the bereaved families a claim which the Edo State Government swiftly dismissed as baseless and inflammatory. “There is no truth whatsoever in the claim that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved or paid N6 billion to any group,” Itua said. “This is a fictitious and malicious lie concocted by IPOB to sow seeds of discord and destabilise the harmony we have nurtured in Edo State.” The government warned that IPOB’s repeated attempts to manipulate public sentiment and incite ethnic hostility under the cover of activism would not succeed in Edo State. “It has become a known tactic of this proscribed group to exploit tragic situations to spread hate and misinformation,” the statement added. “Their agenda of violence and ethnic disintegration has no place here.” Emphasising its commitment to unity, security and justice for all residents, the Edo State Government reaffirmed its stance against any form of ethnic or religious discrimination. The statement also urged security agencies to investigate the source of the inciting publication and prosecute those behind it, stressing that public order and peace must not be jeopardised by dangerous propaganda. “We remain resolute in our commitment to justice, peace and the protection of all Edo people, regardless of background,” the government declared. “We will continue to uphold the values of unity, tolerance and truth in the face of reckless attempts to destabilise our state.”

US Opens Direct Talks With Myanmar Junta, Signalling Major Shift in Washington’s Post Coup Policy.

The administration of US President Donald Trump has opened direct talks with Myanmar’s military installed government, marking a significant departure from Washington’s years-long policy of diplomatic isolation following the country’s 2021 military coup.

According to US officials and people familiar with the engagement, US Assistant Secretary of State for Intelligence and Research Michael Vance played a leading role in the outreach, including talks with Myanmar’s military leader turned president, Min Aung Hlaing, in Naypyitaw on September 15 and 16.

The discussions initially centred on securing the release of American businessman Adam Castillo, who had been detained by Myanmar authorities. The negotiations subsequently opened the door to wider areas of cooperation, particularly efforts to dismantle scam centres operating in Myanmar and targeting victims, including Americans.

US officials are also exploring the possibility of greater access to Myanmar’s deposits of heavy rare earth minerals, resources that are increasingly important to industries producing electric vehicles, wind turbines and other advanced technologies.

The development represents one of Washington’s most significant direct contacts with Myanmar’s military leadership since the 2021 coup. Under previous US policy, the military authorities faced sanctions and diplomatic pressure over the overthrow of the elected government and allegations of widespread human-rights abuses.

The emerging engagement, however, appears to reflect a more transactional approach, with Washington placing greater emphasis on immediate security and economic interests while continuing to maintain contacts with Myanmar’s democratic opposition and ethnic armed groups.

One major priority for US officials is the growing threat posed by cyber enabled scam operations based in Myanmar. The centres have been linked to romance scams and other forms of fraud that have caused billions of dollars in losses, particularly among victims in the United States and other countries.

People familiar with the discussions said the FBI has established direct contact with Myanmar authorities over the scam networks. However, the effectiveness of any cooperation remains uncertain because several scam operations reportedly operate from territories controlled by ethnic militias rather than directly by the central military government.

Rare earth minerals present another strategic dimension to Washington’s renewed engagement. Myanmar possesses significant deposits of heavy rare earths, while the United States is seeking to reduce its dependence on China for critical minerals and strengthen alternative supply chains.

The potential mineral partnership also faces substantial geopolitical and practical obstacles. Many of Myanmar’s rare earth deposits are located in areas controlled by ethnic armed groups fighting the military government, while China remains a major destination for Myanmar’s rare earth exports.

The talks have therefore placed Washington in a delicate position. Greater engagement could advance US interests in combating international fraud and securing critical minerals, but it could also provide Myanmar’s military leadership with greater international recognition at a time when the country remains embroiled in a prolonged conflict and political crisis.

The shift has already attracted criticism from US lawmakers and rights advocates who argue that engaging directly with the military government risks weakening Washington’s longstanding support for democratic forces in Myanmar.

For Myanmar’s military leadership, meanwhile, the opening to Washington could offer an opportunity to reduce diplomatic isolation and strengthen its international standing.

The emerging US Myanmar relationship is therefore likely to remain closely watched across Southeast Asia, particularly as Washington balances economic and security interests against concerns over democracy, human rights and the continuing conflict inside Myanmar.
