Venezuela’s interim President Delcy Rodriguez has stated that her government is not afraid of a diplomatic clash with the United States, despite the US ousting her predecessor Nicolas Maduro in a January 3 military strike. Rodriguez, who was Maduro’s vice president, has been walking a diplomatic tightrope, trying to meet US President Donald Trump’s demands without alienating Maduro loyalists who control Venezuela’s security forces.
In a speech to parliament, Rodriguez emphasized her government’s willingness to engage in diplomatic dialogue, saying “We know they are very powerful. We know they are a lethal nuclear power… We are not afraid to confront them diplomatically, through political dialogue”
Rodriguez has also held talks with Trump, discussing topics such as oil, minerals, trade, and national security. Trump described her as “a terrific person” and said they are making “tremendous progress”.
