The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria, has debunked a viral press statement falsely claiming that the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) has been cancelled. The Council described the report as “false, misleading, and the handiwork of mischief-makers.”
The fake notice, which circulated widely across social media platforms on Saturday, July 19, 2025, alleged that the Federal Ministry of Education and WAEC had cancelled the entire examination due to widespread malpractice, question paper leaks, and unauthorized digital distribution of exam materials.
In a swift rebuttal issued on Sunday, July 20, and signed by the Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina, WAEC firmly denied the claims, stressing that no such cancellation had occurred.
“The said examination has not been cancelled,” WAEC stated. “Though the source of the information cannot be ascertained, the Council is certain that the false claim is being peddled by mischief-makers who are bent on bringing the Council to disrepute and causing confusion and panic among candidates who sat the examination.”
WAEC confirmed that the marking of scripts for the 2025 WASSCE has already been concluded, and assured candidates and stakeholders that results will be released on or before Thursday, August 4, 2025.
The Council also reiterated that official announcements are only made through its verified social media handles, accredited news outlets, and the Public Affairs Department.
“We therefore urge our stakeholders and the general public to disregard the said publication,” the Council emphasized.
