Warri Itakpe Train Derailment: FG Confirms Four Deaths, 24 Injured in Delta Rail Tragedy.
The Federal Government has confirmed that four people lost their lives while 24 others sustained serious injuries following a train derailment along the Warri Itakpe Train Service (WITS) corridor near Agbor in Delta State.
The incident, which occurred on the busy rail route connecting Delta and Kogi states, has raised fresh concerns about railway safety and infrastructure management within Nigeria’s expanding transportation network.
According to government officials, emergency responders and medical teams were immediately deployed to the scene to rescue passengers and provide urgent medical assistance to the injured. Authorities stated that those affected were transported to nearby healthcare facilities for treatment, while efforts were made to account for all passengers on board.
The Federal Government expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and assured the public that a comprehensive investigation would be conducted to determine the cause of the accident. Officials also pledged that appropriate measures would be taken to strengthen rail safety and prevent similar incidents in the future.
The Warri Itakpe rail line remains one of Nigeria’s most strategic standard-gauge railway corridors, facilitating passenger movement and supporting economic activities between several states. Since its commissioning, the route has served as a critical transportation link for commuters and businesses across the region.
Transportation experts have emphasized the importance of continuous maintenance, rigorous safety inspections, and investment in railway infrastructure as Nigeria seeks to modernize its rail sector and improve public confidence in mass transit systems.
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) and relevant government agencies are expected to release further details as investigations progress.
