The White House has barred CNN from travelling aboard Air Force One with US President Donald Trump on Saturday as he heads to Knoxville, Tennessee, for a college football game, marking another escalation in the administration’s ongoing dispute with major news organisations.

CNN had been scheduled to participate in the White House television press pool, a rotating arrangement through which major US television networks provide journalists, cameras and video coverage of presidential activities and share the material with other broadcasters. The White House’s latest schedule guidance excluded CNN from the trip.

The decision comes days after a federal judge ordered the Trump administration to restore White House access to journalists from CNN, MS NOW and Politico. US District Judge Timothy Kelly issued the temporary order after the three organisations challenged the administration’s decision to bar them from the White House.

Reuters reported that Kelly found the outlets were likely to succeed in showing that the revocation of their press credentials violated constitutional due process protections. The administration subsequently restored the journalists’ access to the White House.

However, the court order did not resolve the separate question of CNN’s participation in the presidential television pool. The Associated Press reported that CNN’s removal from the pool had disrupted the normal system in which five major US television networks rotate responsibility for providing shared video coverage of presidential events.

The White House’s latest action therefore affects CNN’s role in covering Trump’s travel rather than simply its physical access to the White House grounds. CNN had been assigned to cover the Tennessee trip on behalf of the broader television press pool, according to the network.

The move also follows a turbulent week in which CNN, MS NOW and Politico journalists were initially denied entry to the White House and had their press credentials deactivated. Trump had announced the restrictions on September 18, accusing the organisations of publishing what he described as false reporting. The affected news organisations challenged the restrictions in federal court.

The dispute has broader implications for how presidential activities are covered, particularly when physical space aboard Air Force One or at presidential events is limited. The White House press pool system is designed to allow one group of journalists to gather material that can subsequently be shared with other news organisations.

For now, CNN’s exclusion from Trump’s Tennessee trip leaves the status of the television pool uncertain. The development comes as the administration and major news organisations remain engaged in a legal and institutional dispute over press access, journalistic independence and the government’s authority to determine which media organisations can participate in presidential coverage.
