Why Peter Obi’s Transparency Earned Public Respect, Kano NDC Governorship Candidate Says.

The Kano State governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has praised former Anambra State Governor and NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi, saying his commitment to transparency and accountable leadership has earned him widespread respect.

Gwarzo made the remarks while felicitating Obi on his 65th birthday, highlighting what he described as the former governor’s dedication to transparency, good governance and the pursuit of national unity.

The Kano NDC candidate’s commendation comes as Peter Obi continues to occupy a prominent position in Nigeria’s emerging opposition political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections. Obi was recently ratified as the NDC’s presidential candidate, with former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso selected as his running mate.

Obi’s public image has, over the years, been closely associated with calls for greater accountability in public office, prudent management of public resources and institutional transparency. His recent call for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to publish candidates’ academic credentials further reflected his emphasis on openness and public trust in the electoral process.

Gwarzo’s comments also come against the backdrop of a significant political realignment in Kano and nationally. The former deputy governor was selected as the NDC’s governorship candidate for Kano ahead of the 2027 elections, while the party has positioned itself as a major platform for opposition forces seeking a broader political alternative.

As Obi marked his 65th birthday, reports also indicated that he made a ₦10 million donation to St. Raphael’s Hospital in Umueri, Anambra State, while urging Nigerians to place service to humanity above elaborate personal celebrations.

Gwarzo’s tribute underscores the growing political importance of Obi’s governance philosophy within the NDC, particularly as the party seeks to build a national coalition around transparency, accountability, effective leadership and unity ahead of the 2027 elections.
