The altercation between FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and a naval officer in Abuja has sparked controversy, with former Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor, and Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, warning that disrespecting uniformed personnel is an affront to the Nigerian state.
Gen. Irabor emphasized that uniforms represent the authority of the state, saying, “The uniform is not about who is wearing it; it represents the power, dignity, and sovereignty of the nation.” He described public reactions to the incident as “largely misguided,” adding that commentators had “missed the real issue.”
Matawalle dismissed calls for disciplinary action against Lieutenant A. Yerima, saying the officer was simply obeying orders and acted professionally. “The officer’s action was lawful because he was trained to be disciplined, loyal, and obedient to orders,” Matawalle said.
Wike has denied reports of a personal beef with the military, insisting his actions were guided by law. “I don’t have a problem with the military, and I will not have a problem,” he said, adding that the FCT Administration would not succumb to intimidation.
The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has called for a national apology to Wike, saying he deserves protection for performing his duties. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has denied reports of gifting a Toyota SUV to the naval officer involved in the altercation.
