Three people are feared dead and 35 others injured after the Warri-Itakpe train derailed at Agbor in Ika South LGA, Delta State, on Monday.
Four coaches reportedly left the tracks. Rescue efforts began immediately, with security agencies and residents working to free trapped passengers and evacuate the injured to nearby hospitals.
Ika North-East LGA Chairman, Mr. Monday Odigwe, said 35 victims are receiving treatment: 13 at Central Hospital, Agbor; 12 at General Hospital, Owa-Oyibu; and 10 at General Hospital, Owa-Alero. He added that officials have been assured the train will be lifted on Tuesday.
Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori described the accident as “heartbreaking and unfortunate.” In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, the governor commiserated with families of the deceased and prayed for the recovery of the injured
He said the state government had mobilized relevant authorities and directed the Commissioner for Special Duties and the chairmen of Ika South and Ika North-East LGAs to coordinate rescue efforts at the scene.
