Justice Charlyne Brumskine of Liberia has been elected President of the Community Court of Justice of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), pledging to promote timely justice and strengthen the administration of justice across the West African subregion.

Her emergence as head of the regional judicial institution places renewed attention on the court’s responsibility to uphold the rule of law, protect human rights and ensure that justice is accessible to citizens of ECOWAS member states.

The ECOWAS Community Court of Justice serves as a regional judicial body responsible for interpreting and applying community law within its jurisdiction. It also plays an important role in addressing human rights violations and disputes brought before it in accordance with its governing legal framework.

Brumskine’s pledge to ensure timely justice highlights the importance of addressing delays in judicial proceedings and strengthening public confidence in regional legal institutions. Delayed justice can undermine access to effective remedies, particularly for individuals and communities seeking redress for alleged human rights violations.

Her leadership will be closely watched as the court continues to navigate the legal and institutional challenges confronting regional justice systems. Ensuring that cases are handled efficiently, fairly and transparently remains essential to maintaining the credibility of the court and its contribution to regional integration.

The court operates within the broader framework of ECOWAS, an organisation established to advance cooperation, economic integration, peace and stability among West African countries. Its judicial mandate provides a legal mechanism for addressing matters that fall within its jurisdiction.

While Brumskine has pledged to prioritise timely justice, the practical impact of her leadership will depend on the court’s ability to translate that commitment into efficient case management, consistent judicial processes and effective delivery of judgments.

Further details concerning her election, tenure, the court’s immediate priorities and any additional appointments should be confirmed through official ECOWAS communications.

For Obaland magazine, her election represents an important development in West Africa’s regional judicial leadership, with the central test being whether the court can continue to strengthen access to justice, uphold human rights and deliver credible legal remedies across the community.

Liberia’s Justice Charlyne Brumskine has been elected President of the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice, pledging timely justice and stronger judicial accountability across West Africa.
