  • The Edo State Government has debunked claims by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) alleging that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved N6 billion as compensation to so-called “Fulani terrorists” following the recent Uromi killings. In a strongly-worded statement on Thursday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, described the accusation as a reckless falsehood designed to incite ethnic conflict and destabilise the peace of Edo State. The controversy stems from the events of 28 March, when sixteen hunters from Kano State were killed in the Udune Efandion community of Uromi. In the aftermath, Governor Okpebholo visited Kano to sympathise with the families of the victims and appeal for calm, while a delegation from Kano later travelled to Edo to engage in peace discussions. IPOB, in a statement released on 21 April, alleged that the Governor had secretly approved a N6 billion compensation package to appease the bereaved families a claim which the Edo State Government swiftly dismissed as baseless and inflammatory. “There is no truth whatsoever in the claim that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved or paid N6 billion to any group,” Itua said. “This is a fictitious and malicious lie concocted by IPOB to sow seeds of discord and destabilise the harmony we have nurtured in Edo State.” The government warned that IPOB’s repeated attempts to manipulate public sentiment and incite ethnic hostility under the cover of activism would not succeed in Edo State. “It has become a known tactic of this proscribed group to exploit tragic situations to spread hate and misinformation,” the statement added. “Their agenda of violence and ethnic disintegration has no place here.” Emphasising its commitment to unity, security and justice for all residents, the Edo State Government reaffirmed its stance against any form of ethnic or religious discrimination. The statement also urged security agencies to investigate the source of the inciting publication and prosecute those behind it, stressing that public order and peace must not be jeopardised by dangerous propaganda. “We remain resolute in our commitment to justice, peace and the protection of all Edo people, regardless of background,” the government declared. “We will continue to uphold the values of unity, tolerance and truth in the face of reckless attempts to destabilise our state.”

Edo-born Nigeria’s vocal powerhouse, Aituaje Iruobe, popularly known as Waje, and singer, Teniola Apata, better known as Teni, are among sensational artistes expected to thrill fans to an unforgettable experience at the Edo Youth Mega Concert, scheduled to take place on Saturday, November 13, 2021, in Benin City.

The concert, with the theme, ‘The Guitar Boy Lives On’, will take place by 6 pm at the Prof. Victor Uwaifo Creative Hub, Benin City, as part of activities lined up for this year’s Alaghodaro Summit.

The Alaghodaro Summit, in its fifth edition, takes place between November 12 and 14, 2021, with the theme, “Edo of Our Dreams: Building a Sustainable Future.”

Chairman, Marketing and Branding Sub-Committee, Alaghodaro 2021, Crusoe Osagie, who spoke to journalists in Benin City, said the live concert will take place after the Grand Commissioning of the Prof. Victor Uwaifo Creative Hub and an Art Exhibition.

Other artistes expected at the live concert include Ayra Star, Johnny Drille and DJ Neptune, among others.

According to Osagie, “This concert, which is organized in honour of one of our illustrious sons, Sir Victor Uwaifo, is part of the government’s constant engagement with Edo youths, who are major drivers of the state’s economic growth.

“It would interest you to know that one of the lead acts, Waje, was raised in Benin City, and aside from featuring as an act for the concert, will also inspire youths in the state.”

He further stated, “The concert will be preceded by the Grand Commissioning of the Prof. Victor Uwaifo Creative Hub and Art Exhibition by 11 am.”

Restating the government’s commitment to the state’s creative sector, Osagie said, “The newly built Edo Creative Hub, which is to be named after the late guitar boy, Sir. Victor Uwaifo, is a multi-million-dollar studio to support artistes and other creative talents in the state.

“It has editing suites and incubates state-based groups and artistes. The facility will be used for live shows and has studios for Nollywood to rent for their productions. The hub also has spaces for artistes in the performing arts. With this and so many other ongoing projects by this administration, we will be able to harness the creative potentials of Edo youths.”
