  • The Edo State Government has debunked claims by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) alleging that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved N6 billion as compensation to so-called “Fulani terrorists” following the recent Uromi killings. In a strongly-worded statement on Thursday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, described the accusation as a reckless falsehood designed to incite ethnic conflict and destabilise the peace of Edo State. The controversy stems from the events of 28 March, when sixteen hunters from Kano State were killed in the Udune Efandion community of Uromi. In the aftermath, Governor Okpebholo visited Kano to sympathise with the families of the victims and appeal for calm, while a delegation from Kano later travelled to Edo to engage in peace discussions. IPOB, in a statement released on 21 April, alleged that the Governor had secretly approved a N6 billion compensation package to appease the bereaved families a claim which the Edo State Government swiftly dismissed as baseless and inflammatory. “There is no truth whatsoever in the claim that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved or paid N6 billion to any group,” Itua said. “This is a fictitious and malicious lie concocted by IPOB to sow seeds of discord and destabilise the harmony we have nurtured in Edo State.” The government warned that IPOB’s repeated attempts to manipulate public sentiment and incite ethnic hostility under the cover of activism would not succeed in Edo State. “It has become a known tactic of this proscribed group to exploit tragic situations to spread hate and misinformation,” the statement added. “Their agenda of violence and ethnic disintegration has no place here.” Emphasising its commitment to unity, security and justice for all residents, the Edo State Government reaffirmed its stance against any form of ethnic or religious discrimination. The statement also urged security agencies to investigate the source of the inciting publication and prosecute those behind it, stressing that public order and peace must not be jeopardised by dangerous propaganda. “We remain resolute in our commitment to justice, peace and the protection of all Edo people, regardless of background,” the government declared. “We will continue to uphold the values of unity, tolerance and truth in the face of reckless attempts to destabilise our state.”

He said some projects to be commissioned as part of activities for the Alaghodaro Summit 2021include the John Odigie-Oyegun Training Centre, New High Court Building, Creative Hub, amongst others.

Ogie noted that the fifth edition of the summit, with the theme, “Edo of Our Dreams: Building a Sustainable Future,” will be held from Friday, November 12 to 14, 2021, at different venues across Benin City, the Edo State capital.

He explained that the annual summit, which is organized by the Edo State Government in collaboration with private sector partners, is aimed at showcasing investment opportunities and engendering economic prosperity in the state.

According to him, “the Alaghodaro celebration this year is unique because it coincides with 30 years of the creation of our dear state. As we mark this five years anniversary, we need to take a reflective look at the 30 years of our continued existence, take stock of our successes and failings and join hands to collectively lead the charge of the next generation.

“The summit, among many other things, is going to be a celebration of the vision and sacrifice of our founding fathers and all those who have held the forte and contributed to the development of our dear state.

“The 2021 summit is aimed at consolidating on years of building a vibrant private-sector-led economy, which has benefited from wide-ranging government reforms and programmes informed by insights, learnings and intelligence, garnered from this sustained and evolving exchange with the private sector.”

Ogie continued: “This year’s event will feature the economic summit, commissioning of select projects, a golf tournament, praise night and other exciting programmes lined up to ensure a stimulating outing. We invite you all to the event and promise that you will be thrilled by the array of offerings that we have lined up this year.

“In the last five years, we have witnessed a number of investments and policy changes that were birthed at the floor of the summit and we hope to continue to tap from the rich resources that this summit offers for sustainable development of our state.”

He further noted, “We have had very impressive support from key private sector actors in the state, who have over the years, thrown their weight behind the summit to ensure its success. We count on them this time around to continue in their support for this impactful gathering.

“You are once again invited to join us in building a sustainable future, as we collectively work to make Edo great again.”
