Former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Professor AbdulGaniyu Ambali, has passed away at the age of 68, marking the end of a distinguished career in academia, university administration, and higher education development in Nigeria.
According to reports, the renowned veterinary medicine scholar died in the early hours of Saturday, June 6, 2026, in Ilorin, Kwara State. His death has drawn tributes from the academic community, public officials, former students, and colleagues who described him as a respected educator and institution builder.
Professor Ambali served as the ninth Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin between 2012 and 2017. During his tenure, he played a significant role in strengthening the university’s reputation for academic excellence, stability, and institutional growth. Following his service at UNILORIN, he continued contributing to higher education as Chairman and Pro Chancellor of Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete.
Born on November 29, 1957, in Ilorin, Kwara State, Ambali studied Veterinary Medicine at Ahmadu Bello University before earning postgraduate degrees from the University of Liverpool in the United Kingdom. Over several decades, he built a respected academic career, published numerous scholarly works, mentored young academics, and held leadership positions within regional and national educational institutions.
The University of Ilorin and several stakeholders in Nigeria’s education sector have expressed condolences to his family and associates, describing his passing as a major loss to the nation’s academic community.
