Haaland Leads 2026/27 Premier League Golden Boot Race as Isak, Thiago and Watkins Mount Challenge.
As the 2026/27 Premier League season approaches, attention is already turning to one of English football’s most closely contested individual prizes: the Golden Boot.
Manchester City striker Erling Haaland enters the new campaign as the leading candidate after finishing the 2025/26 season as the league’s top scorer with 27 goals. The Norway international has now won the award three times and is one Golden Boot away from matching the record four won by Thierry Henry and Mohamed Salah.
The new campaign, however, presents a different challenge. Manchester City are entering the post Pep Guardiola era under Enzo Maresca, while several established and emerging forwards are expected to push Haaland for the scoring crown. The 2026/27 season begins on August 21, with Arsenal hosting newly promoted Coventry City in the opening fixture.
Erling Haaland Manchester City
Haaland remains the benchmark for Premier League goal scorers. His 27 goals last season were five more than second placed Igor Thiago, and he finished the campaign strongly after scoring five times in his final five starts.
The Norwegian has also demonstrated remarkable consistency since joining Manchester City, winning the Golden Boot in 2022/23, 2023/24 and 2025/26. His record makes him the natural favourite heading into another season, although City’s managerial transition could introduce a new tactical dynamic.
Alexander Isak Liverpool
Alexander Isak remains one of the most dangerous alternatives to Haaland. The Swedish forward demonstrated his goal scoring pedigree during his final season at Newcastle, scoring 23 Premier League goals in 2024/25.
His prospects for the new campaign will depend heavily on fitness, consistency and how effectively Liverpool’s attacking system creates opportunities for him. Premier League analysis has identified Isak’s previous 23 goal campaign as evidence of the level he can reach when given a sustained central role.
Igor Thiago Brentford
Perhaps the most intriguing challenger is Brentford’s Igor Thiago.
The Brazilian enjoyed a breakthrough 2025/26 campaign, finishing second in the Golden Boot standings with 22 goals. His tally represented one of the strongest individual scoring seasons by a Brentford player in the Premier League era.
The Premier League’s statistical analysis also highlighted Thiago’s 80 shots inside the penalty area and 41 big chances last season, both figures ranking second among forwards behind Haaland. Those numbers suggest his 22 goal haul was supported by a sustained volume of scoring opportunities rather than a brief run of form.
Ollie Watkins Aston Villa
Ollie Watkins remains another established contender, having consistently produced double digit Premier League goal tallies since arriving at Aston Villa from Brentford.
However, his status heading into the season has been complicated by transfer speculation. Aston Villa are reportedly expecting renewed interest from Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal after rejecting an offer close to £40 million for the England striker. Any move away from Villa Park would, of course, remove him from the Premier League Golden Boot equation.
For now, Watkins remains a Premier League player and a potential contender, but his transfer situation is one of the key developments to monitor before the window closes.
Viktor Gyökeres Arsenal
Arsenal’s Viktor Gyökeres also enters the conversation after adapting to English football and playing in a team that finished as Premier League champions in 2025/26.
The Swedish striker will benefit from Arsenal’s attacking structure and the creative players around him. His challenge will be converting Arsenal’s possession and chance creation into the kind of goal tally required to overtake Haaland.
João Pedro Chelsea
Chelsea forward João Pedro is another player attracting attention ahead of the new campaign.
The Brazilian finished the previous Premier League season as Chelsea’s leading scorer with 15 goals. He also made a strong impression during pre season, scoring a hat trick and providing an assist in Chelsea’s 6-4 victory over Western Sydney Wanderers.
With Chelsea entering the season under Xabi Alonso, Pedro’s role and his ability to translate pre season form into consistent league production could make him one of the more interesting outsiders in the Golden Boot race.
A race that could go beyond Haaland
Current projections continue to place Haaland at the front of the field. Betting market analysis has also listed Isak, Gyökeres, Thiago, Watkins and João Pedro among the leading challengers.
Yet the Golden Boot is ultimately decided over 38 league matches, making injuries, penalties, tactical changes, fixture congestion and team performance crucial factors.
Haaland’s proven record gives him the strongest starting position, but Thiago’s 22-goal breakthrough, Isak’s established scoring pedigree, Watkins’ consistency and the potential of Gyökeres and João Pedro ensure that the 2026/27 race could develop into a genuine contest.
With the Premier League season set to begin on August 21, the question is no longer simply whether Haaland can score heavily again. It is whether any of his challengers can sustain a level of production high enough to deny Manchester City’s Norwegian striker a fourth Golden Boot.
