  • The Edo State Government has debunked claims by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) alleging that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved N6 billion as compensation to so-called “Fulani terrorists” following the recent Uromi killings. In a strongly-worded statement on Thursday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, described the accusation as a reckless falsehood designed to incite ethnic conflict and destabilise the peace of Edo State. The controversy stems from the events of 28 March, when sixteen hunters from Kano State were killed in the Udune Efandion community of Uromi. In the aftermath, Governor Okpebholo visited Kano to sympathise with the families of the victims and appeal for calm, while a delegation from Kano later travelled to Edo to engage in peace discussions. IPOB, in a statement released on 21 April, alleged that the Governor had secretly approved a N6 billion compensation package to appease the bereaved families a claim which the Edo State Government swiftly dismissed as baseless and inflammatory. “There is no truth whatsoever in the claim that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved or paid N6 billion to any group,” Itua said. “This is a fictitious and malicious lie concocted by IPOB to sow seeds of discord and destabilise the harmony we have nurtured in Edo State.” The government warned that IPOB’s repeated attempts to manipulate public sentiment and incite ethnic hostility under the cover of activism would not succeed in Edo State. “It has become a known tactic of this proscribed group to exploit tragic situations to spread hate and misinformation,” the statement added. “Their agenda of violence and ethnic disintegration has no place here.” Emphasising its commitment to unity, security and justice for all residents, the Edo State Government reaffirmed its stance against any form of ethnic or religious discrimination. The statement also urged security agencies to investigate the source of the inciting publication and prosecute those behind it, stressing that public order and peace must not be jeopardised by dangerous propaganda. “We remain resolute in our commitment to justice, peace and the protection of all Edo people, regardless of background,” the government declared. “We will continue to uphold the values of unity, tolerance and truth in the face of reckless attempts to destabilise our state.”

Mfundo Vilakazi put Amakhosi for front for the 30th minute, giving Chiefs 1-0 lead before half-time. After the break, Wandile Duba increase the advantage around the 65th minute, putting Fernando da Cruz boys in strong position.

Siwelele answer quickly through Aphiwe Baliti, wey reduce the deficit and give the visitors hope of making comeback. Chiefs later restore their two-goal cushion through substitute Faiz Abrahams, according to SABC Sport’s match report.

But the drama no end there. Michael N’Guessan enter from the bench and score for stoppage time, making the score 3-2 and putting pressure on Chiefs for the final moments. Despite the late scare, Amakhosi hold their ground and collect all three points.

The victory mean Kaizer Chiefs don now record three wins and two draws from their first five league matches, keeping their unbeaten record intact for the new campaign. Dem also move to 11 points and remain among the early teams wey dey chase top positions for the Betway Premiership table.

Siwelele, meanwhile, still dey struggle to find their first league win of the season. The defeat leave dem with just two points from five matches, according to SABC Sport.

The result also show say Chiefs get better control of the game for many periods. Official match statistics show say Amakhosi enjoy 54 per cent possession, record 16 shots and six shots on target, compared with Siwelele’s nine shots and four shots on target.

The match no easy because heavy rain, cold weather and strong wind make playing conditions difficult for both sides. Kaizer Chiefs themselves acknowledge say the swirling wind affect passing accuracy during the contest.

For Chiefs, the biggest takeaway na the three points and the fact say dem still never lose any league game for the new season. But the late Siwelele comeback also show say Amakhosi still need maintain concentration until referee blow final whistle, especially when dem dey defend a narrow lead.

For Siwelele, the performance fit give dem some encouragement despite the defeat. Dem show strong character by fighting back from two goals down, but dem still need turn that fighting spirit into points as the season dey continue.

With 11 points from five matches, Kaizer Chiefs don establish themselves as one of the early contenders for the upper part of the Betway Premiership table. Their next matches go reveal whether this unbeaten beginning fit develop into a serious title challenge.
