“LAWMA Intensifies Lagos Environmental Crackdown, Arrests Three Over Illegal Waste Dumping in Ketu Alapere”
The Lagos State Government has intensified its campaign against environmental violations following the arrest of three individuals accused of illegally dumping refuse in the Ketu Alapere area of Lagos.
The arrests were carried out by officials of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) as part of ongoing enforcement operations aimed at improving sanitation, protecting public health, and curbing indiscriminate waste disposal across Nigeria’s commercial capital.
According to Lagos environmental authorities, the suspects were apprehended while allegedly disposing of waste in unauthorized locations, an act that violates the state’s environmental sanitation laws. LAWMA stated that the operation forms part of a broader strategy to restore environmental order and ensure compliance with proper waste management practices in densely populated communities.
Officials warned that illegal dumping contributes significantly to blocked drainage systems, flooding, environmental pollution, and the spread of diseases, especially during the rainy season. The agency reiterated that Lagos residents and businesses are required to patronize approved waste operators and dispose of refuse through designated channels.
The Lagos State Government has in recent months intensified environmental enforcement efforts across several parts of the state, targeting individuals and businesses involved in unlawful waste disposal, street trading, and other sanitation-related infractions. Authorities say the renewed crackdown aligns with broader urban sustainability and public health goals in Africa’s largest city economy.
Environmental experts have continued to stress the importance of proper waste management in rapidly growing African cities such as Lagos, where rising population density and urban expansion continue to put pressure on sanitation infrastructure. Analysts say consistent enforcement, public awareness campaigns, and stronger community participation remain critical to achieving long-term environmental sustainability.
LAWMA further urged residents to support government efforts by maintaining cleaner surroundings, reporting environmental offenders, and complying with sanitation regulations designed to promote a healthier and more resilient urban environment.
