Makoko Demolition: Residents Recount Losses as Respite Remains Uncertain

Residents of Makoko, a waterfront community in Lagos, are still reeling from the devastating demolition of their homes, with many forced to sleep in boats and under billboards. The Lagos State Government taskforce operation, which began weeks ago, has left at least 12 people dead and properties worth millions of naira destroyed.

Mrs. Juliana, a mother of 10, lost her home and is now sleeping in a boat with her family. Two of her sons are currently hospitalised. “What will I live for again?” she asked in tears.

The demolition has also disrupted the education of many children, with schools and clinics destroyed. Fishing, the main source of livelihood for many residents, has also come to a halt.

Prof. Olaoluwa, spokesman of the Eegu General Assembly, warned that the continued demolition of riverine settlements could erase entire communities. “These demolitions make us feel that Eegu people and other riverine communities are being targeted for extinction,” he said.

The Lagos State House of Assembly has intervened, ordering an immediate halt to the demolition and assuring residents of compensation. Chairman of the ad-hoc committee, Mr. Noheem Adams, directed the state government to stop further demolition activities until further notice.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s Special Adviser on E-GIS and Urban Renewal, Dr. Babatunde Olajide, had earlier announced that the state government would compensate residents whose properties were demolished and is working on a large water city project for the community.Makoko Demolition: Residents Recount Losses as Respite Remains Uncertain

Residents are hopeful that the intervention will bring relief, but many are still struggling to come to terms with their losses. Would you like to know more about the Makoko demolition or the government’s plans for the community
