  • The Edo State Government has debunked claims by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) alleging that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved N6 billion as compensation to so-called “Fulani terrorists” following the recent Uromi killings. In a strongly-worded statement on Thursday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, described the accusation as a reckless falsehood designed to incite ethnic conflict and destabilise the peace of Edo State. The controversy stems from the events of 28 March, when sixteen hunters from Kano State were killed in the Udune Efandion community of Uromi. In the aftermath, Governor Okpebholo visited Kano to sympathise with the families of the victims and appeal for calm, while a delegation from Kano later travelled to Edo to engage in peace discussions. IPOB, in a statement released on 21 April, alleged that the Governor had secretly approved a N6 billion compensation package to appease the bereaved families a claim which the Edo State Government swiftly dismissed as baseless and inflammatory. “There is no truth whatsoever in the claim that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved or paid N6 billion to any group,” Itua said. “This is a fictitious and malicious lie concocted by IPOB to sow seeds of discord and destabilise the harmony we have nurtured in Edo State.” The government warned that IPOB’s repeated attempts to manipulate public sentiment and incite ethnic hostility under the cover of activism would not succeed in Edo State. “It has become a known tactic of this proscribed group to exploit tragic situations to spread hate and misinformation,” the statement added. “Their agenda of violence and ethnic disintegration has no place here.” Emphasising its commitment to unity, security and justice for all residents, the Edo State Government reaffirmed its stance against any form of ethnic or religious discrimination. The statement also urged security agencies to investigate the source of the inciting publication and prosecute those behind it, stressing that public order and peace must not be jeopardised by dangerous propaganda. “We remain resolute in our commitment to justice, peace and the protection of all Edo people, regardless of background,” the government declared. “We will continue to uphold the values of unity, tolerance and truth in the face of reckless attempts to destabilise our state.”

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has cleared Peter Obi, former Labour Party presidential candidate, to contest its presidential primary election ahead of the 2027 general elections. Obi, who was screened by the party’s national screening committee on Tuesday, emerged as the sole aspirant after purchasing the presidential nomination form.

Speaking after the screening, Obi dismissed speculation that he had emerged as the party’s consensus presidential candidate, emphasizing that the process remained open and democratic. “How can it be based on consensus? The party opened up the expression of interest forms for people to buy. I bought the form. As the party said, I’m the only one who expressed interest. That’s it,” he saidNDC Clears Peter Obi for 2027 Presidential Primaries

Obi commended the NDC for conducting a transparent screening process, stating, “At NDC, we are choosing to do things properly. When we say there is going to be a screening, there is going to be a screening. That is democracy in action.” He also outlined his priorities for the 2027 general elections, focusing on building a united, secure, and prosperous Nigeria through inclusive governance anchored on the constitutional principle of federal character

Obi emphasized the need to address hunger, poverty, and corruption, noting that public resources must benefit all Nigerians rather than a privileged few. “So many Nigerians go to bed not knowing where the next meal will come from. That must change. We must stop turning public assets into private wealth,” he added.

The former Anambra State governor also met with former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso after securing the NDC presidential primary clearance, with Kwankwaso expressing optimism about the party’s prospects

  • Labour Divided Over ₦70,000 Monthly Palliative as ₦500,000 Minimum Wage Demand Persists Reported by Musa Antiketu | Journalist at Obaland Magazine Nigeria’s organised labour movement is divided over the Federal Government’s proposed ₦70,000 monthly transport support for workers, with some labour representatives welcoming the intervention while others insist that an immediate salary increase is necessary to address the rising cost of living. The disagreement comes as organised labour maintains its demand for a ₦500,000 national minimum wage, arguing that the current statutory minimum of ₦70,000 has lost much of its purchasing power amid rising transportation, food, housing and other essential expenses. The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has rejected the proposed transport palliative as an inadequate substitute for a direct salary increase. The congress also called for the implementation of outstanding agreements with workers, particularly in the health sector, where unresolved salary-related issues have remained a source of tension. However, Gbenga Olowoyo, National Secretary of the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC), welcomed the government’s agreement to provide the monthly transport support while reiterating labour’s ₦500,000 minimum wage demand. Olowoyo said organised labour remained open to reasonable negotiations with the Federal Government but had not abandoned its proposed wage benchmark. NLC President Joe Ajaero has called for negotiations on a new minimum wage to begin promptly, arguing that early discussions would allow sufficient time to reach an agreement before the next review. The competing positions within the labour movement highlight the challenge of balancing immediate financial relief with demands for lasting improvements in workers’ earnings. While some representatives have welcomed the transport support, the TUC insists that temporary interventions cannot replace higher salaries and the fulfilment of outstanding agreements.
