Ogbakha-Edo Warns Against Alleged Imposition in Edo South APC Senatorial Race

A socio-political group, Ogbakha-Edo, has raised concerns over alleged attempts by the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State to interfere in the process of selecting the party’s Edo South senatorial candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued by its Chairman, Professor Sam Guobadia, the group warned against what it described as “overt and covert moves” to impose a preferred aspirant, allegedly disregarding due process, popularity, and the will of party members in the district.

While acknowledging that candidate selection is primarily an internal affair of political parties, Ogbakha-Edo maintained that the issue raises broader concerns about democratic integrity and the rights of party members.

“We must state unequivocally that this matter is of grave concern, with far-reaching implications for the integrity, pride, and democratic rights of Edo South people,” the statement said.

The group expressed strong displeasure over what it described as a potential violation of the rights and privileges of APC members in Edo South, noting that any attempt at imposition would undermine the dignity of the district and the Benin people.

It further alleged that there were moves to “gift” the senatorial ticket to a preferred aspirant as a concession to a political figure outside the state, describing such actions as provocative and unacceptable.

Ogbakha-Edo also rejected arguments suggesting that the origin of the candidate within Edo South justifies the process, insisting that legitimacy must come from a transparent and democratic selection.

“Representation must derive from the people’s mandate, not from orchestrated arrangements,” the group stated.

Although it noted that the allegations could still be speculative, the group said certain public statements from party leadership circles suggest the possibility of a predetermined agenda, with indications of undue influence and potential manipulation of party processes.

The group reiterated its condemnation of any attempt to manipulate the APC senatorial primary, stressing that the choice of candidate must rest solely with party members in the district.

“Any attempt to undermine this democratic right will be firmly resisted,” the statement added.
