Former Super Eagles captain Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha has backed Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé to win the 2026 Ballon d’Or, while identifying Manchester City, Barcelona and Bayern Munich as his leading contenders for the UEFA Champions League title.
Okocha shared his assessment in an interview with French publication Le Journal du Dimanche, discussing the competition for football’s most prestigious individual award and the leading clubs in European football.
The Nigerian football legend acknowledged that the 2026 Ballon d’Or race remains highly competitive, with Mbappé, Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane, Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal and several Paris Saint-Germain players among the contenders.
However, Okocha believes Mbappé’s goalscoring achievements across major competitions strengthen his claim to the award.
“The suspense is more exciting than ever. There are a good half-dozen contenders: Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappé, Lamine Yamal, the PSG players,” Okocha said.
He added that Mbappé deserved the honour for finishing as the leading scorer at the World Cup, in the Champions League and in the Spanish league, citing tallies of 10, 15 and 25 goals respectively.
The former Nigerian international’s endorsement highlights the importance of individual performance in the Ballon d’Or debate, although the final outcome depends on the award’s voting process and the assessments of its voters.
Beyond the individual award, Okocha named Manchester City, Barcelona and Bayern Munich as his preferred candidates to challenge for Champions League glory this season.
He pointed to Manchester City’s substantial spending during the summer transfer window as evidence of the club’s determination to strengthen its squad and remain competitive in Europe.
Barcelona also earned his backing because of their impressive start to the campaign, particularly the attacking partnership between Raphinha and Yamal.
Okocha believes Bayern Munich’s squad continuity could prove equally important. Having retained their key players after coming close to winning the competition the previous season, the German club could benefit from greater understanding and cohesion among its established players.
His selections reflect his assessment of the teams’ squad strength, recruitment and performances, rather than a guarantee of which club will eventually lift the trophy.
Despite his previous spell at Paris Saint-Germain, Okocha did not include the French club among his three leading Champions League favourites.
However, he praised PSG youngster Désiré Doué, highlighting the midfielder’s technical quality and natural composure on the ball.
Okocha spent four years at PSG, where he played alongside several notable footballers, including Ronaldinho, Mikel Arteta and Nicolas Anelka. His continued appreciation for the club underscores the lasting connection between the former midfielder and the French side.
Okocha’s comments add a prominent African football voice to two of the season’s major debates: the race for the Ballon d’Or and the battle for European club supremacy.
For Mbappé, the endorsement reinforces the attention surrounding his individual achievements, while Kane and Yamal remain part of a competitive field of candidates.
Manchester City, Barcelona and Bayern Munich, meanwhile, face the challenge of converting their respective strengths into consistent performances in the Champions League.
As the season progresses, results on the pitch will ultimately determine whether Okocha’s selections prove accurate.
