On May 9, 2024, the Osun State Amotekun Corps made an important arrest, apprehending two suspects involved in burglary and theft. The individuals, identified as Toheeb Yekini, aged 35, and Yekini Sulikaleni, aged 30, are both artisans from Iwo, Osun State. Of particular significance is the fact that Yekini Sulikaleni is an ex-convict.
The arrest took place in the Oje Oniyan area of Iwo following a tip-off from vigilant residents who witnessed the suspects breaking into a shop in the community. The concerned citizens promptly alerted the Amotekun operatives, who swiftly responded to the distress call.
In a statement released by the spokesperson for the Osun Amotekun Corps, Idowu Yusuf, it was confirmed that the operatives apprehended the suspects at the scene of the crime. The shop had been burgled, and items stored inside had been stolen. The two suspects, Toheeb Yekini and Yekini Sulikaleni, were subsequently taken into custody.
According to the statement, the suspects admitted to their involvement in the crime and pleaded for mercy. They have since been handed over to the Department of State Services (DSS) for further interrogation and prosecution. To clarify their occupations, one suspect is a welder, while the other is a bricklayer.
The corps commander, Brigadier General Bashir Adewinmbi (retd.), commended the swift action of the Amotekun operatives in apprehending the suspects while they were in the act of committing the crime. During the investigation, it was revealed that Yekini Sulikaleni had previously served time in prison for a similar offense, indicating a pattern of criminal behavior.
Brigadier General Adewinmbi urged residents to continue supporting security agencies by providing timely intelligence that could help prevent crimes in the state. This arrest serves as a reminder of the importance of community vigilance and cooperation in maintaining law and order.
It is worth noting that this arrest follows another recent arrest made by the Amotekun Corps. On May 5, one Adegoroye Akinola was apprehended on suspicion of defrauding nine people of N1.5 million. Akinola allegedly deceived his victims by offering assistance in processing Corporate Affairs Commission registrations and obtaining passports.
