The Edo State Police Command has clarified the circumstances surrounding a viral video involving its officers, stating that the incident was misinterpreted.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, the Command said the video showed a 23-year-old man, identified as David Michael, who was experiencing a medical emergency at the time.
According to the police, the young man had gone into convulsions and became violent, making it difficult to restrain him and posing a risk to himself and others. Officers at the scene were reportedly trying to manage the situation and transport him to a medical facility for urgent care.
The Command noted that the viral clip was recorded by an onlooker who did not witness the full sequence of events, leading to widespread misunderstanding and concern on social media.
It added that those involved, including the victim, have since released another video to clarify what transpired, expressing hope that the updated account would receive similar public attention.
While defending the officers’ response as an emergency intervention, Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, reiterated that all police actions must reflect professionalism, civility, and respect for human rights.
He further directed officers across the Command to strengthen their knowledge of first aid, lawful use of force, and adherence to operational guidelines, including Force Order 237.
The police assured residents of their continued commitment to accountability, transparency, and the protection of lives and property.
Members of the public were also encouraged to report emergencies or lodge complaints through designated channels provided by the Command.
