Akeem Sanyaolu, a retired officer of the Nigeria Customs Service, has raised concerns over alleged harassment and illegal property seizure by officers of the Nigeria Police Force, Zone 2 Command, which oversees Lagos and Ogun states.
Speaking on Monday, Sanyaolu recounted how, on February 5, 2020, while he was away from Lagos, his wife informed him that police officers had forcefully entered their residence. The officers allegedly seized three Ford caravan buses and several documents without presenting a warrant or court order.
According to Sanyaolu, he later discovered that the officers, acting without proper authorization, claimed the vehicles were stolen goods from Tincan Port. Despite his repeated attempts to reach out to the officers involved, particularly Inspector Ola, his efforts were ignored.
After failing to recover his property, Sanyaolu lodged a formal complaint to the Inspector General of Police in August 2022. This led to an investigation by the Assistant Inspector General of Police, but no significant progress was made. Sanyaolu eventually filed another request in May 2024, seeking a case file transfer to enable further investigation.
Sanyaolu also described a humiliating encounter with ASP Felix at the Zone 2 Command, where he was falsely accused of being involved in theft. Despite his demands for a retraction of the defamatory remarks, the police did not provide evidence of the petition they were acting upon.
To date, Sanyaolu’s three Ford caravan buses and the other seized items remain unreleased, despite his continuous efforts to retrieve them over the past four years.
When contacted, the spokesperson for Zone 2, Ayuba Umma, promised to investigate the allegations but had not provided further updates at the time of this report.
