Madonna has paid tribute to William Orbit, the Grammy-winning producer who helped define one of the most important chapters of her career, calling him “genius” and “otherworldly” in an emotional Instagram post.
Orbit died at home on 23 July at the age of 69. His family announced his passing on Friday “with profound sadness.” No cause of death was given.
On Saturday, Madonna shared her own remembrance. Alongside a video of the two accepting a Grammy together, she wrote about the creative partnership that changed both their lives.
“You pressed a magic button inside of me and I fell into a galaxy of unrealised dreams,” she wrote. “Your music gave me a magic carpet to fly on and I visited many places.”
When Madonna began working with Orbit in the late 1990s, she was looking for a new sound. She had just come off Evita_ and had become a mother. She wanted music that reflected that shift.
Orbit, born William Wainwright in London, was the right producer at the right time. Known for ambient records and inventive remixes, he wasn’t a typical pop hitmaker. That’s exactly why Madonna chose him.
The result was _Ray of Light_, released in 1998. The album fused electronic dance music, ambient techno, trip-hop and pop into something that still sounded futuristic decades later.
It won three Grammy Awards, including Best Pop Album, and is widely considered one of Madonna’s best works. Singles like “Frozen” and “Ray of Light” became global hits, but the album’s influence went beyond the charts. It proved that mainstream pop could be experimental, spiritual, and personal at the same time. You Were My Ray of Light”: Madonna Remembers William Orbit as a “Genius, Otherworldly” Collaborator
“I had an epiphany when I met you and started working with you,” Madonna wrote. “You inspired me to sing and write in ways I never had before, without caring if my words made sense or not.”
She also linked the album to a personal milestone. “In many ways you were my Ray of Light – as was my daughter Lola who was born around this time,” she said.
“The studio was often church-like and I would sit in silence, waiting for your ideas to explode out of your keyboard or your guitar and then I would run with them,” she wrote. “I miss those days.”
That process became the blueprint for their work together. Orbit didn’t dictate. He created space. He would build textures — shimmering synths, echoing guitars, wide-open drums — and Madonna would find melodies and lyrics inside them.
They reunited several times after _Ray of Light_. Orbit produced much of her 2000 album _Music_, including the title track, which became another worldwide number one. He also worked on several songs for her 2012 album _MDNA_.
Each time, the sound was different, but the approach was the same. Orbit gave Madonna permission to try things she wouldn’t have tried with anyone else.
While his work with Madonna made him a household name, Orbit’s career stretched far beyond that one partnership.
In the UK, he was credited with helping Blur reinvent themselves on their 1999 album _13_. Where Britpop had been loud and anthemic, _13_ was fragile, strange, and beautiful. Tracks like “Tender” and “Coffee & TV” showed a band willing to fall apart and rebuild, with Orbit guiding them.
He also produced for a remarkably wide range of artists: Pink, U2, All Saints, Robbie Williams, Britney Spears, and Beth Orton. His 2000 production of All Saints’ “Pure Shores” became one of the defining UK singles of that year.
What tied all the work together was Orbit’s ear. He treated electronic sounds like instruments and real instruments like electronics. He loved space, reverb, and silence. He could make a pop song feel intimate and a ballad feel cosmic.
Orbit never chased fame. He stayed behind the mixing desk, in his studio, working. Artists sought him out because he listened first. He would spend days talking, finding out what they were afraid to say, and then translate it into sound.
That’s why so many of the records he touched marked turning points. For Madonna, it was motherhood and spirituality. For Blur, it was the end of Britpop. For Pink, it was finding an edge.
Even as music changed around him, Orbit stayed consistent. He kept releasing his own ambient albums, kept scoring, kept experimenting.
Madonna acknowledged that in her tribute. “Even though I worked with other producers over the years, I never forgot you and the magical time we spent together,” she wrote. “I was so lucky to have known you and fallen down the rabbit hole with you.”
Tributes poured in from across the music world after news of his death. Fellow producers called him a pioneer. Artists called him a mentor. Fans returned to _Ray of Light_ and heard it with new ears.
For Madonna, the loss is personal as well as professional. Orbit was there for one of the biggest reinventions of her career. He helped her find a voice that was softer, older, and more honest.
In pop music, reinvention is expected. But real transformation is rare. Orbit gave Madonna that.
“You were my Ray of Light,” she wrote. It was both the name of the album and, for her, the name of the man who made it.
William Orbit leaves behind a catalog that still sounds ahead of its time. And he leaves behind artists who learned, in his studio, that the bravest thing you can do in pop music is to be quiet long enough to hear something new.
