Zarinah “Zari” Hassan is a Ugandan-born socialite, entrepreneur, and former musician who has built a public brand around business, family, and reinvention. Now based in South Africa, she is known as “Zari The Boss Lady” — a name that reflects both her personality and the empire she runs across education, real estate, beauty, and hospitality.
Born on 23 September 1980 in Jinja, Uganda, Zari comes from a mixed heritage of Ugandan, Burundian, Indian, and Somali roots. She grew up with five sisters and two brothers, including Asha Hassan, Abdul Karim Hassan, and Zuleha Hassan. Her mother, Halima Hassan, passed away in 2017 from heart failure. Her father is a farmer living in Uganda.
Zari has described her childhood as normal, but one that motivated her to aim higher. “I always desired to be rich,” she has said, explaining that the drive to create a different life for herself has fueled her work ethic.
Her early years in the UK were far from glamorous. She worked as a house help and in a sandwich factory while studying. After returning briefly to Uganda, she relocated to South Africa, where she would eventually launch both a music career and a business portfolio.
Zari’s first step into music came in South Africa with the release of her single “Oli Wange.” However, she says she walked away from music early because she was not willing to compromise herself to get ahead in the industry.
Instead, she pivoted to modeling and appearing as a video vixen. That move brought her wider recognition. She featured in popular music videos including “Iyena” and “Utanipenda,” which positioned her at the center of East and Southern African pop culture in the late 2000s. In 2007 she received a Channel O nomination for East Africa Video of the Year.
She has said she inherited some investments from her late husband, but insists the growth and daily running of the businesses is her own work.
Her entrepreneurial efforts have earned recognition. In 2021 she won Best Entrepreneur of the Year and Sophisticated Woman of the Year at the African Social Entertainment Awards, and Most Stylish Entrepreneur at the Couture Africa Styles Awards. In 2020 she also received a Social Media Award at the One Africa Awards.
Zari was married to Ugandan businessman Ivan Ssemwanga. The couple had three children together: Pinto, Raphael, and Quincy.
Zari has spoken openly about leaving the marriage after it became unstable. She said a conversation with one of her sons pushed her to prioritize a stable home, and she chose to raise the children as a single mother. Ivan Ssemwanga passed away in 2017.
After her marriage ended, Zari began dating Tanzanian music star Diamond Platnumz. Their relationship drew massive attention across East Africa, in part because of their age difference — Zari is eight years older — and because they started dating before Ivan’s burial.
Zari and Diamond have two children together: Latifah Dangote, born 6 November 2015, and Prince Riaz, born 6 December 2016. Both children have large social followings. Latifah, with over 6 million followers, is also a brand ambassador for NMB Bank in Tanzania. Prince Riaz has more than 1 million followers.
The relationship ended in 2018. While cheating allegations circulated publicly, Zari later said the breaking point was dishonesty. In an interview with Toke Makinwa, she explained she asked Diamond to publicly acknowledge Hamissa Mobeto as his second wife, and when he refused, she decided to leave.
In recent years, Zari and Diamond have appeared together again on screen in the Netflix reality series _Young, Famous & African_, which premiered on 18 March. The show also features Nadia Nakai, Khanyi Mbau, Andile Ncube, and Annie Macaulay-Idibia, among others.
Zari has since been linked publicly to a new partner, GK Choppa, whom she has featured on her social media.
As a public figure, Zari is often in the conversation about beauty and lifestyle. She has faced speculation about skin lightening, with fans comparing older photos to her current complexion. She has not publicly confirmed or denied the claims.
She is also frequently discussed for her fashion. Known for polished styling, designer looks, and coordinated appearances, she has become a style reference for many of her followers.
Questions also come up about friendships in the industry. She and Kenyan socialite Vera Sidika were once closely associated online, but recent appearances together have been rare. Vera has said they remain friends, though Zari has not commented publicly.
Zari is known for her collection of luxury cars, which includes a white Range Rover Sport, a Bentley, a Mercedes-Benz sedan, and a Chrysler.
In terms of property, she owns a home in an upscale neighborhood in Pretoria, South Africa, and still maintains her late husband’s mansion in Munyonyo, Uganda.
Zari’s net worth is estimated at $8.8 million, generated through her businesses and brand endorsements. Beyond the numbers, her influence lies in how she has positioned herself: a mother of five, a business owner, and a woman who speaks candidly about relationships, money, and ambition.
With over a decade in the spotlight, she has moved from music videos to boardrooms, and from tabloid headlines to running institutions.
On social media, where she goes by @Zarithebosslady on Instagram, X, and Facebook, she continues to document both her business ventures and family life, keeping a direct line to millions of followers across Africa and the diasporaNigeria:Zari Hassan: From Jinja to Mogul – The Story of Uganda’s ‘Boss Lady’ in South Africa
Zari Hassan’s story is often framed around her relationships, but the through-line of her public life has been self-determination — leaving jobs she outgrew, ending relationships that didn’t serve her, and building businesses she controls. That’s the identity she continues to lean into as “The Boss Lady.
