  • The Edo State Government has debunked claims by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) alleging that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved N6 billion as compensation to so-called “Fulani terrorists” following the recent Uromi killings. In a strongly-worded statement on Thursday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, described the accusation as a reckless falsehood designed to incite ethnic conflict and destabilise the peace of Edo State. The controversy stems from the events of 28 March, when sixteen hunters from Kano State were killed in the Udune Efandion community of Uromi. In the aftermath, Governor Okpebholo visited Kano to sympathise with the families of the victims and appeal for calm, while a delegation from Kano later travelled to Edo to engage in peace discussions. IPOB, in a statement released on 21 April, alleged that the Governor had secretly approved a N6 billion compensation package to appease the bereaved families a claim which the Edo State Government swiftly dismissed as baseless and inflammatory. “There is no truth whatsoever in the claim that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved or paid N6 billion to any group,” Itua said. “This is a fictitious and malicious lie concocted by IPOB to sow seeds of discord and destabilise the harmony we have nurtured in Edo State.” The government warned that IPOB’s repeated attempts to manipulate public sentiment and incite ethnic hostility under the cover of activism would not succeed in Edo State. “It has become a known tactic of this proscribed group to exploit tragic situations to spread hate and misinformation,” the statement added. “Their agenda of violence and ethnic disintegration has no place here.” Emphasising its commitment to unity, security and justice for all residents, the Edo State Government reaffirmed its stance against any form of ethnic or religious discrimination. The statement also urged security agencies to investigate the source of the inciting publication and prosecute those behind it, stressing that public order and peace must not be jeopardised by dangerous propaganda. “We remain resolute in our commitment to justice, peace and the protection of all Edo people, regardless of background,” the government declared. “We will continue to uphold the values of unity, tolerance and truth in the face of reckless attempts to destabilise our state.”

NLC Suspends FCT Strike as Teachers Resume Classes Following Agreement With Government.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has suspended its indefinite strike and directed affected workers, particularly primary and secondary school teachers, to return to their duties following negotiations with the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA).

The suspension, announced by the FCT NLC chairman, Knabayi Adalo, followed conciliatory discussions involving the labour union, the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), the FCTA management and the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment.

According to News reports the decision was communicated in a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, after an emergency meeting of the union’s State Executive Council at Labour House in the city’s Central Business District.

The union directed affected workers, particularly teachers, to resume work on Wednesday, October 21, following agreements addressing key disputes over career progression, promotion examinations and the redeployment of experienced education officers.

Promotion Disputes Addressed in Negotiations

A major issue behind the industrial action was the disagreement over the promotion of education officers, particularly the requirement for available vacancies before eligible teachers could advance to higher positions.

Under the resolutions reached, promotion vacancies for education officers will align with established positions declared by the FCT Education Secretariat. The administration also expressed optimism that the anticipated retirement of some directorate officers would create opportunities for eligible personnel to advance in their careers.

The union further announced that a new date would be communicated for the 2025 promotion examination, following approval by the FCT Executive Council and communication with the FCT Civil Service Commission.

The examination is expected to provide eligible officers with an opportunity to progress professionally after delays surrounding the promotion process.

Redeployment of Senior Teachers Remains on Hold

The negotiations also addressed concerns surrounding the redeployment of officers benefiting from the Harmonized Retirement Age for Teachers back into classroom duties.

According to the NLC, stakeholders agreed to maintain the FCT Executive Council’s directive suspending the redeployment process until further notice.

The issue had contributed to tensions between the labour union and the FCT Administration, particularly among experienced education officers who questioned the implications of the policy for their professional responsibilities and career progression.

While the latest agreement represents progress in the negotiations, the implementation of the resolutions will be critical to determining whether the underlying disputes have been fully addressed.

NLC Warns Against Failure to Implement Agreement

Despite suspending the strike, the labour union has warned that the industrial action could resume if the FCTA or other relevant authorities fail to implement the agreed resolutions within the stipulated timelines.

Adalo said the union would establish a monitoring committee to track compliance and ensure that the commitments made during negotiations are fulfilled.

The NLC also secured an agreement that workers and teachers who participated in the strike would not face reprisals, penalties or victimisation for joining the industrial action.

The assurances are intended to protect affected workers as they return to their duties and help sustain the progress achieved through negotiations.

Background to the FCT Teachers’ Strike

The FCT NLC began an indefinite strike on October 7, 2026, following unresolved labour disputes involving teachers and other education officers in the territory.

The union had raised concerns about promotion delays, the requirement for vacancies before career advancement, the 2025 promotion examination and the redeployment of experienced education administrators.

The dispute disrupted normal activities in some public schools across the FCT’s six area councils, raising concerns about the potential impact on pupils and students.

Although the strike has now been suspended, the latest development does not necessarily mean that every dispute has been permanently resolved. The union’s warning that industrial action could resume underscores the importance of timely implementation of the agreements.

For pupils, parents and school administrators, the resumption of classes offers an opportunity to restore normal academic activities. However, sustained industrial harmony will depend on continued engagement between the labour unions and the FCT Administration.

The coming weeks will therefore be important in determining whether the agreements translate into lasting improvements in teachers’ career progression and working conditions.
