  • The Edo State Government has debunked claims by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) alleging that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved N6 billion as compensation to so-called ā€œFulani terroristsā€ following the recent Uromi killings. In a strongly-worded statement on Thursday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, described the accusation as a reckless falsehood designed to incite ethnic conflict and destabilise the peace of Edo State. The controversy stems from the events of 28 March, when sixteen hunters from Kano State were killed in the Udune Efandion community of Uromi. In the aftermath, Governor Okpebholo visited Kano to sympathise with the families of the victims and appeal for calm, while a delegation from Kano later travelled to Edo to engage in peace discussions. IPOB, in a statement released on 21 April, alleged that the Governor had secretly approved a N6 billion compensation package to appease the bereaved families a claim which the Edo State Government swiftly dismissed as baseless and inflammatory. ā€œThere is no truth whatsoever in the claim that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved or paid N6 billion to any group,ā€ Itua said. ā€œThis is a fictitious and malicious lie concocted by IPOB to sow seeds of discord and destabilise the harmony we have nurtured in Edo State.ā€ The government warned that IPOB’s repeated attempts to manipulate public sentiment and incite ethnic hostility under the cover of activism would not succeed in Edo State. ā€œIt has become a known tactic of this proscribed group to exploit tragic situations to spread hate and misinformation,ā€ the statement added. ā€œTheir agenda of violence and ethnic disintegration has no place here.ā€ Emphasising its commitment to unity, security and justice for all residents, the Edo State Government reaffirmed its stance against any form of ethnic or religious discrimination. The statement also urged security agencies to investigate the source of the inciting publication and prosecute those behind it, stressing that public order and peace must not be jeopardised by dangerous propaganda. ā€œWe remain resolute in our commitment to justice, peace and the protection of all Edo people, regardless of background,ā€ the government declared. ā€œWe will continue to uphold the values of unity, tolerance and truth in the face of reckless attempts to destabilise our state.ā€

TheĀ Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has said it would charge Peter Nwachukwu to court for culpable homicide over the death of a popular gospel singer and spouse, Osinachi.

Obaland Tv gathered that the suspect has been transferred to the homicide department for further investigation.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, said Nwachukwu would be charged to court as soon as the investigation into the matter is concluded.

Adeh told the news correspondent on Sunday that Nwachukwu, who is currently being detained at the Lugbe Police Station in the FCT, was arrested after the younger brother of the deceased reported the matter at the police station.

Ā  Ā Ā A source said following the transfer of the case to the homicide department, the police have made a certain revelation that would aid their investigation.

It said the police already had a voice recording where she narrated her ordeal while on admission at the hospital. In the said voice recording, she was said to have said her husband should be held responsible if anything happened to her.

The source said the voice message was a clear indication that the late singer was not going to come out of her ordeal alive.

Ā  Meanwhile, the Federal Government has vowed Osinachi, who allegedly died as a result of unreported serial domestic violence meted out to her by her husband, would get justice even in death.

Ā  Ā Ā Minister of Women Affairs, Dame Pauline Tallen, in a statement she personally signed, said domestic violence is a crime under the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act (2015), adding that the husband of the late gospel artiste would be prosecuted.

Ā  Ā Ā The 42-year-old artist died on Friday after spending days at an undisclosed hospital in Abuja.

Tallen said: ā€œWe cannot continue to keep losing our young women to mentally unstable young men all in the name of marriage.

ā€œLife first before anything. Our religious and traditional institutions, as well as our immediate families, must join us in this fight to rid our society of such acts before they become fatal.

ā€œI know more women are going through such traumatic experiences, please give them a listening ear, provide wise counsel and save them from untimely death. I am not advocating divorce for those, who will misunderstand me, All

ā€œI am asking is that we stand up to the truth where necessary and promptly so as to save a life when you have an opportunity to do so.

ā€œMay the soul of Osinachi and all those who have lost their lives as a result of domestic violence rest in peace.

ā€œIf you see something, speak out, so that together we can save lives.ā€

Tallen visited the Arco Estate, Abuja,Ā Ā home of the late singer, located on the Airport Road, Lugbe.
